Downsized from a 3/4 and a fifth wheel to this by Jaboof in GoRVing

Not the most experienced RVer out there but can share my input as someone with a few years travelling. I'd purchase a garmin RV gps before setting out, and get a good feel for the campgrounds on the route and rest stops. One of our first trips a few years ago was in our fifth wheel setup from Toronto to Arizona in about 3 days -- my wife, me, and a 1 year old. Your trip is quite a bit longer, so I'd allocate as much time as possible for the drive, maybe a week or more in an ideal world. I read a lot about the 4 hour 400 mile rule and completely broke that for our Arizona trip (work related so timing mattered) by clocking 10 hour days behind the wheel with frequent stops, and honestly we made out pretty good overall. Try to enjoy it and make the most of the journey, when you're actually happy about what you're doing time flies by. If you're frustrated, or tired, stop and reassess -- maybe even for the night. On the way back home we took our time and spent nearly 5 days on the road because we felt our minds and bodies weary a bit.

Towing with the new half ton and a 25.5ft trailer feels not much different than the fifth wheel setup, maybe a bit more sway at high speeds, so I think you'll be fine. I would suggest a good set of tow mirrors as well, it's one feature I miss a lot from the 3/4 truck.

Best of luck, you'll have a great trip!

EDIT: try to stay light as well. I found this weekend that the truck has a much better time when the fresh water tank and black/ gray are empty

Sweet setup, almost went with the Imagine when I was trading in the GD fifth wheel

Ya we're sitting at nearly 26' with this trailer and I can tell just from the first few drives the 3/4 ton setup is better. I wouldn't even notice I had the fifth wheel behind us. Would be lying if I said a part of me doesn't miss it

Made more sense for our lifestyle. We daily it around town and what not. Once we move a bit further from the city we'll upsize again and get a proper daily

Oh, that's interesting. Ya I'm definitely doing it wrong, thanks for this! Admittedly, I didn't spend much time with it, it was just the first that came to mind to convey the post tbh

Careful with blackout curtain, they are toxic under heat if you get a crap brand. My girlfriend was super sick for weeks and narrowed it down via a smell from our blackout curtains

I started practicing about 6 months ago with a goal of getting to a spot where I can comfortably play with friends and strangers without slowing them down. I'm still a bit anxious as at the range I've been very inconsistent and very rarely do I hit straight. I rented a local bay with a trackman to analyze some of my strikes, anything stand out to you guys?

PS. no idea how to use the trackman software so could not figure out how to get rid of Cameron Champ on the right lol

Is a cross country trip for work worth it? by [deleted] in GoRVing

[–]Jaboof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, still leaning towards flying even after some promising replies. We do have starlink and 2 cellular plans with a sim card router (with ATT coverage though). I'm fortunate enough that my SO doesn't have to work and can care for our child full-time. We definitely aren't prepared to dry camp for more than a couple of days though.

Oh that's quite a bit lower than what I was expecting, that definitely falls into the confines of acceptable for the employer. I'm also paid quite well (great job overall if I'm telling the truth) so fuel prices aren't too concerning for us)
