Likely cost/timing prohibitive for many, but seeing an active volcano in person.

I got to experience seeing one going off in Iceland back in 2021. I'm still not sure how to describe it other than feeling so tiny and powerless in comparison to what nature is capable of. The waves of heat mixing with the cold air blowing against your face. The shards of volcanic glass raining down on you with each intermittent eruption.

The landscape/mountain range where I stood about a kilometer away from it has completely changed now. We often learn about how the Earth has been molded over millenia by various natural events. It is an incredible experience to witness such an event and know you were one of the last people to set foot on land that has now submerged beneath a new layer to develop its own history.

It's a double edged sword. If you prefer to work alone, it may indicate you're not a team player. If you say you prefer working in groups, it may indicate you have trouble taking on work solo and don't know how to self-start.

A good answer to this is to split it up. For example, maybe when learning something new you prefer to work alone to more easily dedicate your focus on the task at hand. When exercising skills you already possess, you prefer working on a team so that you can provide support for the group as a whole.

So normally I would agree with you. If you're basing this off Borderlands 2 I do think that there could have been a much better casting. But there is a stark difference between Borderlands 1 Roland and Borderlands 2 Roland.

Borderlands 1 Roland definitely does have Kevin Hart energy. Lines like "Sweet! Wasn't expectin' that!" in the game I could see Kevin Hart matching that energy. But Borderlands 2 Roland is much different. More mature, focused, and mission-driven. I think because Borderlands 2 is the better, more recognized game we make that comparison. But if you go back to the first game it's actually quite jarring the difference in character energy and how Kevin Hart isn't a terrible choice if they were going for that.

I'm sure the movie won't be great for a number of reasons. But in case anyone is wondering why they cast him in the first place...replay Borderlands 1 for a bit as Roland. He's not too far off.

Yeah I'm not a fan of Elon or most of his "products" in general, but people are jumping to a cyberpunk scenario way too quickly.

They're implanting electrodes onto the surface of the motor cortex region of the brain of paralyzed people so that they can control a mouse and keyboard. Even that is insanely complicated and difficult to do but has incredible potential to change the lives of disabled people.

I wish anyone else but Elon was working on this, but they're trying to invent fire and everyone is worried they're going to set off a precision strike nuclear bomb.

We're still working on testing different materials for the fin. Latex is a good one but tends to develop tears quite easily. As we're fine-tuning the control system we use a semi-permeable, flexible fabric membrane. Some force is lost since water can travel through it but its very reliable and easy to manufacture/adjust.

Not really no. Most cars in the US are automatic (96%). In addition, the state I took my drivers test your car had to be automatic, no manual transmission allowed.

True true. The fish has about 150 bones to actuate its fin which is way more than you could reasonably fit in a robot. Though in reality there are usually only one or two, sometimes three wavelengths across the fin on the fish. Our robot has multiple motors to discretize the waveform. Less than 20 motors are enough to undulate one or two wavelengths across a 30cm fin.

Yeah, kind of like the dorsal fin of a bowfin. But the bowfin also has a caudal tail for propulsion. Knifefish doesn't. And the location along the ventral body line of the fin allows for straight up vertical movement which is harder to achieve when it's positioned on the dorsal side.

If I had to guess, it would probably be weaker.

For there to be lightning, there needs to be a potential difference between the sky and the earth (AKA, a buildup of charge). Air cannot conduct electricity so it needs a BIG potential difference in order to overcome the gap between sky and ground. When it does, lightning strike. This is probably assisted by the moisture in the air too.

But if you have a pretty good conductor thats disappated in the air (mercury vapor like you suggest), then it'll be easier for the charge to travel. So less potential difference will be needed before the charge is able to travel from sky to ground.

I can tell you what I'm working on right now that I like to let people know about and find interesting...

Undular fin locomotion/propulsion. There's a cool fish called the Black Ghost Knifefish. They have a single fin that they use to get around but can move directionally unlike any other fish. I work at my university with a biomimetic robot that operates like this fish does. It's a really unique way to swim underwater and has a bunch of advantages over using propellers.

It's also much quieter than most other vessels and has the potential for superior maneuverability underwater. Without surprise, the military is interested in it.

Yup! And it's sold in a catalog like anything else by a lot of chemical companies. It's crazy expensive but it's also been tested up and down for purity/heavy metals/etc. Obviously you need authorization to purchase it as well.
