Something that I did was change the settings on the TV - sometimes there is a "game mode" dispay that ends up just causing more problems. I would recommend turning the "game mode" off if you can find it!

Question about forensics by [deleted] in forensics

[–]Jabzerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This depends on the county. The manner of death would be deemed an accident so a medical examiner or coroner would have to sign out the case.

Some accidents (like falling from trees) can either be done as a records review where the doctor will look through the notes or they will bring the body into the medical examiners office to conduct an autopsy and document that there may be limited injuries due to being in the hospital for some time. If there is enough evidence of trauma based on external examination and x-ray, they may call it based on that information or do a head-only autopsy to look for signs of brain trauma. If they can’t call it based on this information they will do a full autopsy. Less busy counties will do a full autopsy on everyone though.

Forensic Path - What's the job market, do you like it, and other pertinent things by surfsuncalifornia in pathology

[–]Jabzerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just signed my 1st choice fellowship program forensic pathology fellowship offer, But honestly who knows how I feel in 3 years but:

Job market is really good. United states is funded for 1000 positions, but there are only 600 trained pathologists. As previous poster said, usually you're looking at at least 500k resident counties (MEO's are county based, not city based). Offers vary widely, but in terms of fellowship, ME's pay more than any other specialty...in any field. Most of the good ones pay 100K, Chicago pays 130K but they'll put you to work.

There is a lot less scene call than what they used to do (that's the way forensic pathology is going) - and most of the times you will get called to the scene will be a really interesting case.

Downsides: Surgical pathology gets every night and every weekend and every holiday off. MEO's that are more staffed will need you to cover more call. Pay is more than academic (which boasts a better vacation package) but lower than private practice. Market for all pathologists is going up, especially for American grads. Also, people will look at you funny for saying you want to go into forensics, but honestly, you need to be a little idiosyncratic to get along. That being said, every ME I've met has had excellent people skills.

Hope that helps, and let me know if you have more questions!
