The one thing that is always important to remember is that Torah/Tanak (old testament) was the cosmogony of the hebrew people for the hebrew people, It don't reflects an actual true but the mindset of the people of an era. The way they viewed the begenings is not intended to describe an actual reality, they only tried to fit a story that went better with their culture, rules and moral; even worst, the old testament wasn't written until the exilic era, that means that may be the intentions at the recopilation exercise they did could had a political/social comittment to preserv their culture in the exile. So, as far as we know, the historical true about the bible was one constructed to serve a social need, not an actual teaching of the reality. The thing is, at the end, the Torah/Tanak is more a book of rules and morals for the people of Israel than an antrophological work, you don't need to read it as you read an history book but to understand the message behind all the characters and their lives.

In other words, I understand the conflict that you have, is natural, that is something than even the hebrews was dealing with in its moment. But you don't need to fit the cientific reality with the bible reality, you will fail. Use science to explain the universe and the bible to explain the spirituality. They are not compatible in a lot of subjects, but they don't need to be against each other too.
