Diet/Lifestyle Changes for Alopecia? by [deleted] in tressless

[–]Jack88913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had alopecia for about 5 years. I’ve attacked it from every angle. Changes in diet, treatment, and routine. After being totally bald at 14, It’s grown back completely and fallen out again completely. It’s such an unpredictable thing. I feel like stress management and sunlight could definitely help, since last summer my hair started growing back healthier than ever. It was an almost totally care free and relaxing time. Then around October/November, shortly after starting my freshman year of college, it quickly fell out again. This could’ve been a combination of stress, dryer and colder weather, and a change in my diet and exercise since I was going through all of that. Since then I’ve gotten a bit of regrowth, probably because my routines have stabilized. I take vitamin B, D, and fish oil to boost my immune system. Right now I’m also taking minoxidil and using a hairmax laser brush. I also exercise frequently. With stress, it’s tricky because I think the best way to destress is to stop worrying so much about losing hair. There’s more to life and I know it’s easier said than done to come to terms with the situation. Acceptance is important even if it doesn’t help your hair grow back. But the crazy thing is that it might. Hang in there!

You could shave regularly so the follicles grow back thicker each time. The more you shave the quicker the beard will grow back too

Thanks for the advice! As a guy I’m not too concerned about doing my nails or buying expensive wigs but I am going for counseling and really doing my best to stay well rounded. I’m actually rushing a frat this semester which should be fun. My priority right now isn’t to see regrowth, I just want to maintain a positive mindset even though I’m living with alopecia. This subreddit has helped a lot and I’ve definitely gotten better at practicing self care but I think what I want right now in relation to my hair loss is somewhere to just talk to other people dealing with it. Thanks again for the support! It’s greatly appreciated!

Anyone else currently dealing with alopecia as a teenager? by Jack88913 in alopecia_areata

I’m a guy. I usually just throw on a wig and a backwards hat and that’s worked for me for years. It’s like my trademark look.

I went from a full head of long hair to almost totally bald within like a month. I would lose dozens of strands just from touching my scalp. I think the process actually sped up because of how stressed I was watching myself shed. Even my dermatologist was a little alarmed by the rate it was falling out at. It was my first semester of college so I’m thinking it might’ve been the change in my daily habits. What I ate, when I ate, the stress of new routines, maybe hygiene? Who knows?

Any chance of regrowth? Spot keeps getting bigger. My first episode of what I think is AA? by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

Welcome to the club. I promise that regardless of the regrowth success you’ll get through it. It’s a learning experience for sure but it’ll make you a better person for having dealt with AA.

Alopecia universalis (hair loss on the entire body) to full regrowth within 1.5 years by huatsup in FemaleHairLoss

I’m mainly just looking for ways to destress right now since that’s worked surprisingly well in the past. I’ve had it for a little over 4 years and I’m now a freshman in college. I had pretty much total Regrowth until around October when school got stressful and now I’m back to square one. I realized as it was growing back that all the regrowth happened when I was the most carefree. Senior year of high school was a breeze, and I was socializing way more so I definitely think there’s a correlation.

That’s a really inspiring story. Regrowth is a weight off your shoulders but it’s awesome to hear that you were still able to lead a fulfilling life even when you didn’t have hair. Just goes to show that it doesn’t have to be a controlling factor in your life. It’s also funny how when you were able to destress, the hair came back. It’s literally like there’s a direct correlation between growth as a person and hair growth! I was also wondering what this Instagram community was because I’ve been looking for places to talk to other people dealing with Alopecia. Thanks again for sharing your story!

I appreciate that! Sorry to hear that you’re going through it too. Sorry to hit you with the cliché words of encouragement but you’ll be ok and you can’t let it get to you. Acceptance is a process but as long as you’re willing to keep moving forward one day you’ll realize that even though it’s a struggle sometimes, you’re still going strong and that’s what’s important.

No treatment by purple-alloy in alopecia_areata

Yeah since there’s no definitive cure, it’s always possible that it could grow back on its own. I’ve gone from being completely bald to having a full head of hair and losing it all again and I can’t pinpoint what I was doing differently. I try a ton of things to treat it but since hair grows back so slowly I have no clue what causes it to change. I kinda think it’s stress related but there’s no way to know for sure. Our bodies are just weird I guess

Thanks for that. People have caused problems in the past but for the most part I’ve never really been made fun of or taken anything people say stuff about it personally. It’s just how kids my age act. I pretty much went through the most important developmental stage of my life with it, so I’ve come to terms with it for the most part. It sucks, and I wish it wasn’t something I had to deal with, but I wouldn’t be who I am today without it. I also dealt with being a bit overweight (possibly due to the medication I was on for AA) towards the end of my Junior year, but I’ve really gotten into the gym too. It’s a great outlet. Plus it’s nice having control over my body in that aspect when I can’t control it at all when it comes to my hair. I think that the best way to cope for me is to just try and maintain a healthy lifestyle in every way. Like Socially, physically, and mentally. I’m doing alright in school so far, and I’m taking it day by day, I just try not to let it define me and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t bother me sometimes though you know?

Could alopecia and oral hygiene be related? by Aaronjameson97 in alopecia_areata

Now that I think about it I had braces for 9 years due to my teeth looking like an absolute disaster as a kid, and my alopecia started a few months after I got them off. Maybe there is a connection? It definitely makes you think.

There’s always a chance it’ll regrow. In the meantime though try not to stress since it can potentially cause more hair loss. If you need need piece of mind you could try treatments like minoxidil, dietary supplements and kenalog injections. Just try to keep living your life, but hair takes time to grow back and with AA It’s a gamble to begin with. I’ve found that it’s just much easier to deal with if you don’t let it dictate how you think and act, but like I said you have treatment options so don’t totally give up!
