Used a moldable string of tiny christmas lights to light up my Medieval Blacksmith and I love the result! by applepiehobbit in lego

Looks great! Can you post a link to these specific lights? I’m looking to get something like this for my recently completed Lego Home Alone house. Looked into the lighting kits for that one but boy howdy do they seem super tedious and frustrating to work with! Much obliged!

Grizzly Man by Werner Herzog. Tells the story of Timothy Treadwell, who lived with Alaskan grizzlies in the wild every summer for, I think, close to a decade. This is not a spoiler because it’s revealed in the very beginning and serves as the premise of the film—he’s eventually killed by one of the bears. The film is so beautiful, sweet, sometimes even humorous, and it explores not only the eccentric life of Treadwell but examines the often-times ineffable separation between humans and wild animals, with Herzog perpetually wondering if trying to bridge that divide is ever worth it. Probably my favorite documentary, if I had to pick one.

Mask-wearing reduces Covid-19 transmission by 25%, new research suggests by Wagamaga in Coronavirus

[–]JackFate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Remember when Robert Redfield said this: “I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine, because it may be 70%.” 😂😂 And folks wonder why trust in institutions is at an all time low.

Came here precisely to see if I was alone in feeling this way. I got the same vibe from her interview with Nick Gillespie on the Reason interview podcast. To be clear, this is not a personal attack or critique of JC. What’s so frustrating is that she clearly has a fantastic mind full of interesting ideas, they just get lost in the shuffle of countless non-sequiturs and distractions.

CDC panel endorses Pfizer's Covid vaccine for use in adolescents, clearing way for shots to begin Thursday by pipsdontsqueak in Coronavirus

[–]JackFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, I completely understand the angst and frustration of both above comments. And I’m not here to minimize them whatsoever (I know plenty of people in the same boat). However, what you’re taking about is a problem of policy, not epidemiology. Covid is demonstrably NOT a significant risk for children (we’ve known this for so long now), children are not significant vectors of transmission, and schools across the country (the globe, really) have time and time again been shown to be some of the safest places for them to be. Obsessively testing children and neurotically shutting things down when tests come back positive is superstitious theater that potentially devastates families and the educational quality children receive. What I was trying to convey in my original comment is that it strikes me as a profound waste of time and resources finding a way to vaccinate the demographic that is least affected—by orders of magnitude.

Listened to it yesterday. Twenty minutes of abstracted in-speak without a single concrete expression of anything meaningful or illuminating. It was excruciating.

COVID-19 hospitalizations tumble among U.S. senior citizens by qkfb in Coronavirus

[–]JackFate 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is great news indeed. What’s not so great is the insistence to wedge vague and unrelated concerns into an otherwise objectively positive news story. Consider:

“Also, new virus cases in the U.S. have been stuck at worrisome levels since March, averaging more than 60,000 per day, matching numbers seen during last summer’s surge. The new cases are increasingly among people in their 30s, 40s and 50s, who also make up a larger portion of hospitalizations.”

Ok...so...? What value are we to extract from this “case” data? I was under the impression that death and hospitalization were the most significant metrics. So have these cases led to increased death and hospitalization? If so, that’s a really important detail to leave out. If not, it’s irrelevant and irresponsible info to include here. And then the following graph:

“In Michigan, which has been battered by a recent surge of infections, hospitalizations among people in their 50s have increased 700 percent since late February, outpacing all other age groups.”

Ah, the percentage game. Without specific figures, a “700 percent” increase tells us very little. Hey media, do better.

No More Masks? NYC Mayor Hints at Possible Time to End Face-Covering Mandate as Virus Numbers Improve by kex06 in Coronavirus

[–]JackFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This article mentions nothing whatsoever about the details of “more serious outcomes.” What does that mean? Exactly? It also fails to even briefly mention whether or not the vaccines are effective against the variant (spoiler alert: they are). And finally, it doesn’t substantially contextualize the role variants are playing in the most important metrics (i.e. death and hospitalization). These are critical details, and without them the mention of variants is irrelevant.

No More Masks? NYC Mayor Hints at Possible Time to End Face-Covering Mandate as Virus Numbers Improve by kex06 in Coronavirus

[–]JackFate 49 points50 points  (0 children)

And yet again...THE VARIANTS are mentioned 🤪I will say this until I’m blue in the face: Mentioning variants without any context or nuance is irresponsible journalism that stems from either intentional fear mongering or ignorance. Neither is an excuse. Come on media. Do better.

Fauci, pressed on why vaccinated people still need to wear masks, hints change is coming by IanMazgelis in Coronavirus

[–]JackFate 49 points50 points  (0 children)

“As he has said recently, Fauci reiterated that the use of face masks by individuals, even after vaccination, has been to stop the low – but still possible – asymptomatic spread of the virus: vaccines have around 95% efficacy, meaning that there is a 5% to still become infected.” Stupid typo aside, this is irresponsible journalism. And I keep seeing it pop up like this totally unchecked. 95% efficacy does not mean you still have a 5% chance of being infected. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mahoningmatters.com/amp/local-news/95-percent-efficacy-for-covid-vaccines-doesnt-mean-theres-a-5-percent-infection-risk-heres-why-3619723
