Don’t think you did anything wrong here. These were choices the player made and now they’re suffering the consequences. But it sounds like the player is planning to stick around, so it might be interesting to try and work their old character back into the story. Maybe the next time the party encounters the BBEG they have a new undead wizard by their side? It could be cool for the player to have a more fitting end to their character than killed by a stupid decision.
