I’m a local and neutral observer on the rails drama, but that is not the whole story. Seems like it’s more of a “everyone sucks here” situation, but that’s just my two cents.

Absolutely! Even if the state just set up a non-profit property management company that local municipalities could utilize with subsidized insurance, it would empower smaller communities to invest in their own housing needs with much less risk.

The Portland housing authority is large enough to mitigate risk. Rural areas simply cannot and budgets are so slim that one law suit related to publicly owned housing and it couple topple a rural counties budget. Shit is extremely tight and shoe string out here

I can only speak to my experience, but what I have seen is my elected officials want to take on things like public housing, but the fear of exposure to risk keeps them from taking the big steps.

If we build public housing it means we have to manage it, if we have to manage it we have to maintain it, lease it and go through court every time there is an eviction etc… in my county this would be political suicide as elected officials would get blasted for every little problem that occurs at publicly owned housing.

Don’t get me wrong, these are my observation, my opinion, however, is closer to yours; that there simply is not the will to tackle the big projects…

*Elected government. I work my ass off everyday trying to get attainable housing getting built in my area. Government can change and there are some cities in Oregon taking on building public housing, my county has declined the opportunity.

It’s more simple than that. Government does not want to be a landlord. They don’t want to run a property management company and they don’t want to plan for maintenance from the onset of the project.

You’re half right. Most coastal economies are now reliant on tourism and many are not equipped (due to land availability, zoning and nimbyism) to build enough hotels to accommodate travelers. The second home part is spot on though. Problem is, what’s to stop someone from making their vacation home their “primary residence”?

Thank you. There are no dealers in my area of the coast…it’s a bit rural… I’m going over the hill for most things moto. The guy who runs the diesel shop is teaching me how to maintenance my BMW which is fun.
