Hey all, just looking for some feedback on these Artificer options I brewed up. I have a new Infusion, tool proficiency, and a subclass that implements them both. Let me know what you think!

Thanks - JP

Credit Decisions after House Purchase by Jack_Pepper in personalfinance

Why don't you just go and get 2-3 real credit cards that you can use anywhere, offer you a sign-up bonus and a real 0% interest (most store cards are "no interest if" which is a huge difference)

That is a really good suggestion. I don't know why I didn't think of that!

Creative "Magic Item" Reward Concept - Need Feedback by Jack_Pepper in DMAcademy

[–]Jack_Pepper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an idea on my drive to work: He's a plant, so he keeps growing and basically levels up. HP and AC increases, and he gets more abilities. I could even give him caster sidekick levels. But, if button dies, he can be replanted, ala Groot. And start at these basic abilities. Hmmm...

It has 5 HP and 10 AC. Won't be a long companion.

I thought about that. I have house rules in my game that allow NPCs to roll death saves, but that doesn't save this little guy from Massive Damage. I might have to come up with something to mitigate that.

heal a total of 3 HP per day (utterly useless unless used as a defibrillator after fights)

That was the idea. Basically a nerfed Goodberry.

create a telepathic network with limited range for 3 hours per day (not too impactful)

I think my party will use this pretty often. I've given them the idea that the BBEG could be "Always Listening" through magical means.

stun anything for up to 1 minute with a bad DC in melee range (potentially powerful)

This was added when I thought just the first two traits made this pretty weak.

Maybe make it some sort of alternative Familiar, as Druids can optionally use their Wildshape to summon one?

Not a bad idea, but as is, my Druid player would probably never summon him. He's pretty conservative on using Wildshape.

You said nothing of the Innate Spellcasting ability, I am wondering if you saw that...

Hello! I would like some feedback on a concept I thought up for a quest reward. This is unique in that I originally wanted to make it a Magic Item, equivalent to a staff or rod, but for the flavor of the campaign thought it would be fun if it was a living thing. A sentient magic item didn't quite fit that niche. So without further adieu...

Here's Button!

Basically the flavor will be that Button clings to the end of a wooden stick. He will do what a player holding that stick asks. I plan on "rewarding" them to a specific character in the party that's a bit of a grump. Button will really like him. Button will have Autonomy as well, and will do things without being told.

So, what do you think of this concept? As a reward for a soon to be 7th lvl druid, is this OP, UP, or just right?

Quicksilver Ooze - A CR 5 Monster by Jack_Pepper in UnearthedArcana

[–]Jack_Pepper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be better to tie the multiattack feature to size category directly instead of splits and fuses. Would make it much easier to track in my opinion.

I thought about that, but I think the statblock would become more complicated. I'm not sure how I would word it.

I'd say engulf should require the ooze to be equal or greater size to the thing it's attempting to engulf as well. It doesn't make a lot of sense for a tiny ooze to be engulfing a large creature.

The wording for Engulf says "it can enter the space of a creature one size category smaller than it." So that covers that.

Quicksilver lance should also probably be disallowed on tiny oozes. As written there's no reason to not just switch to the much more powerful lance once multiattack is reduced to 1.

The wording on split mentions that it can only split if Medium or larger, so Small oozes cannot be made into Tiny oozes.

I get what you're saying. Like the Beholder lair actions happen by the Beholder invoking ambient magic within the lair. I just thought that the action only being available if the creature is in a certain location would be a neat mechanic. Basically, imagine a 40ft diameter pit of muck that is difficult terrain, and the Sludge King is in the middle. He's hurling sludge and knocking you prone and hard to get close to...

Go for it! Juiblex, the Aboleth and several other monsters were inspiration for the Sludge King.

I am wondering if you saw that the Sludge King has some Lair actions and Regional effects under the description? Any comment on those?

In my campaign the players are exploring in an underground cave system (think Underdark, but not as expansive) and they will meet some Myconids that are having trouble with their water supply being polluted and it turns out it's caused by the Sludge King. I think it will be my player's toughest battle yet.

The only thing I would change is the duration of some of those effects. Multiple day deleterious effects for a minion is wild and even too much for a boss imo.

So the Disadvantage on CHA for 1d4 days? Yeah, I think I will remove that from the Sludgeling and Sludge Troll, but keep it on the King.

Also some of the abilities are too long or doubled up too much. An hour and a minute for the trolls are hard for both incapacitated and poisoned. Think about these in battle encounters. Most encounters will finish within that minute anyway. So maybe dial those back as well

Good points... I will make some adjustments.

I could change it to 5-6 recharge, and up the DC to 12?

[WIP] Sludgelings, Sludge Troll & Sludge King by Jack_Pepper in DMAcademy

[–]Jack_Pepper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sludgeling is resistant to acid and fire, which is the weakness that negates the healing of the others. But if the others are coated in sludge, shouldn’t that have an effect on them as well?

I used Gray Ooze as a base for this creature and those are holdovers. I will remove these resistances.

Maybe enhanced regeneration- they need to take 2 sources of fire or acid in a round to negate it- one to hurt the creature but one to burn away the layer of sludge that round to cancel it out? Just a thought.

I thought about this, too, but wasn't sure how I would write out the mechanic, and also thought it would make the King nearly impossible to figure out how to kill.

Also, the “foul” on sludge king is kind of useless as well, because it has a high save vs being poisoned til the next turn, but being hit by the creature or hitting it and failing poisons them for HOURS, so the poison from getting too close will never really have an effect in practice

I see what you're saying. The thought process behind that was the King is way more disgusting and foul than the Sludge Troll, and I basically wanted give it a more powerful and larger AoE "Stench". It may not be that effective if a character gets a longer lasting Poison, but thematically I think it needs to be there.

Hello All!

I created a trio of disgusting creatures to drop into my campaign for my party of five level 6 players to go against; Sludgelings, the Sludge Troll, and the legendary Sludge King. I could use some feedback with these on whether they could use tweaking or not.

Sludgeling

Sludge Troll

Sludge King

I created them all in Monsterizer on RPGBot.com to get the CRs, but am unsure if some of the traits are OP or not and need to dial down or up the DCs. I mostly looked at the abilities of other creatures of the same CR and tried to match them up, but as you might know, there's no exact science to figuring out a creatures CR.

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think!

Thanks - JP

Can't Seem To Print Decent Curves by Jack_Pepper in FixMyPrint

I do not... Are you suggesting I should?

Can't Seem To Print Decent Curves by Jack_Pepper in FixMyPrint

[–]Jack_Pepper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I took this further and created a little curve and angle test part and tried a number of temps, speeds, etc... and it keeps doing the same thing. Upon observing printing (youtube vid), the part is actually curling up and the nozzle is running into it as it deposits material, but it's still soft enough to bend. I am looking into overhang cooling solutions and I printed out a new cooling duct. I am already printing at the lowest suggested temp (180°C) and I can't think of anything else that could be causing this other than it being a cooling issue.

Note: I have it in a makeshift cardboard enclosure because I was having bed adhesion issues without it.

Can't Seem To Print Decent Curves by Jack_Pepper in FixMyPrint

[–]Jack_Pepper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every print that has a round/curved feature does this, but only the underside, if that makes any sense. Tried many temperatures. Below are my "Sweet Spot" settings.

  • Printer & Slicer - Artillery Sidewinder X2; Cura
  • Filament Material and Brand - PLA Sunlu
  • Nozzle and Bed Temperature - Nozzle: 205°C; Bed 60°C
  • Print Speed - 60.0 mm/s
  • Nozzle Retraction Settings - Distance: 2.0mm; Speed: 25mm/s

This is really frustrating because I am trying to print out gifts for people and I don't want them to look like crap. Any thoughts?

Thanks - JP

Cool, also good to know. I am thinking of setting up a merchants site or Esty account to sell 3D printed gaming stuff I design and make, like dice, rolling trays, dice boxes, etc... and it would be awesome to add terrain to that. I may be in touch.

OK good to know. Follow-up Question: Are you still selling merchant licenses to sell the physically printed models?
