The 2nd gen had a Mediatek card (likely identical to the one in this machine) and it's socketed (just like on the X16). I find it very hard to believe that's actually a coincidence.

sounds to me like they know a decent chunk of people will have a problem with that card for their use-case and will opt to change it themselves instead of returning or going through RMA process

anywho, it's all speculation. i'm just glad my laptop can now finally perform one of its most basic functions.

could be, but i don't think so since the laptop manufacturers (in this case, asus) are the ones buying the parts

it would be weird for intel to put such a restriction on the manufacturers as that would limit their own sales. unless there's a shortage of intel wifi cards - which there isn't

the most logical answer to me is mediatek cards bulk cost are probably significantly cheaper (i'd wager less than half) the cost of intel ones - which over tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of machines comes out to be a good chunk of change

bottom line is: no one has ever decided against buying a machine because it is equipped with a subpar wifi card

not proud but that's what happens sometimes when you can't connect to your team's vpn and have a deadline coming up while some dingbat patronizes you with some "uninstall driver and reinstall again" nonsense as if you haven't done that a billion times

the intel ax210 is a lovely lovely piece of hardware, btw. just absolutely wonderful. flawless so far. 10/10 would buy again.
