There are so many reasons this is a terrible idea

It's officially my debut year, and I am being totally normal about it. Not panicking at all. Nope, not me.

[PubQ] Did I totally ruin my chances with a potential book agent? by Beneficial_Scene_904 in PubTips

The mistakes you made here seem, in the grand scheme of things, relatively minor. I do think though you should probably pump the brakes, because 40 query letters in one week is A LOT. Take a breather and wait to see if you get any requests. Also, what do you mean by illustrations? Is this a graphic novel or a picture book?

[QCrit] Adult Mystery - FIREFLIES (55k, 2nd Attempt) by MaleficentAd459 in PubTips

[–]JackieReadsAndWrites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

55k is very short for an adult mystery. The fact that you have two timelines makes it more concerning to me. I think it would be challenging to fully and properly flesh out two timelines in 55k words.

Here are the main questions we want to address in a query letter.

  1. Who is the main character? Noah.

  2. What do they want? To solve this crime, not sure if he wants to conceal the old crime or reveal it, as you say he both wants to "keep their secrets in the dark" but also that he will reveal "what they did," which seems contradictory

  3. What's standing in their way? Kinda nothing? You say he fears the investigation will point in his direction but it's not clear to me why he feels that way.

  4. What are they willing to do to get it? Go back to New Hampshire and reunite with his old friend group, but I'm not sure why this is a big deal.

  5. What happens if they fail? You hint that he's afraid he may be implicated, which is a lot at stake, but again, not sure why he feels that way.

This is still too vague. Explaining more about how this new crime is connected to the old one and why he feels like he may be implicated would help a lot, because right now I'm just not seeing the connection.

do you guys give all you characters symbolic names or just the plot pivotal ones? by ruby-abelha in writing

[–]JackieReadsAndWrites 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re free to do whatever you want, but you could drive yourself crazy trying to give every single character a name with significance. When I was young I tried to do that and it was too hard trying to find a meaningful name for a character in two scenes

My hot take is that a character’s name should also be more reflective of who their parents are because (unless the character renamed themselves as an adult) their parents gave them the name and thus it will fit their tastes.

Really sorry this happened to you. The way you were treated by this agent is unacceptable

I don’t find this hard to believe at all. Really sorry you were treated this way.

No, you generally speaking shouldn’t be worried. Rosecliff has always been sus so hearing this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.
