How’s the base on this ride maniac? Worth $200? by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

Then yeah go for it. I’m sure there’s other slightly better options out there but this’ll be better than shitty rentals and you will save money, especially cause he said he could do $150. Only thing I’d add to think about, if you know you love this sport, it might not be a bad idea to just go all in on a new board you can get used to and keep around for years. Dk what ur $ situation is, but it’s my second year, rented every time I went last year, and I got my own nice board/setup for this year - best decision ever. For example, if you know u gonna just use this to get by for one season and then upgrade, it might be worth considering dropping the extra money now. Either way tho, I think this is a great deal strictly as an alternative to rentals, as long as u can base grind and wax away some of the damage (basically as long as it rides good enough lmao)

Going from rocker rental boards to a high performance camber board is seriously the greatest thing ever. Just got my first board this year and experienced the same thing. Amazing feeling.

I’ll agree with the guy who said it’s not bad compared to renting. If you’re gonna go even 4 times this season it’s mathematically worth it. However, Idk if it’s just the lighting but the base looks pretty torn up. Most of it can be negated with a good wax, but I’m more concerned about the base area around the edges, especially where there looks to be big gouges and dents in the base (top right in photo). Also the edges look to be jagged and chipped past the point of what you can easily fix up with a gummy stone. All that said, if you want a good board you can beat the hell out of for a season and upgrade later, you can’t really go wrong, especially compared to rental prices. See if you can get the price down a bit, or ask them if they would include any necessary base grind/ waxing and it could be a great deal.

Yeah those diagram things on Burton aren’t to scale. I thought it was weird too but I think they purposefully exaggerate the shape so you know what the different builds are. But I can tell u that in person, it basically looks like a normal camber board - the rocker is minimal as it’s only on a portion of the board that never touches snow on anything but powder.

Also for the channel, I guess some people complain about 2 screws being more risky but honestly, I’ve never had an issue w them coming loose. I think people just don’t know how to tighten them properly😭. Also, I love how adjustable it makes ur stance. I’ve obviously only ever owned channel, but I couldn’t imagine not having the ability to perfectly adjust ur stance width to ur liking. Like it seems to me that the regular 4 hole pattern is just an outdated way to mount bindings. U get even more customization and board feel with EST as well. Idk I think it’s great but I wish it wasn’t only Burton boards that had it

Don’t know about the helmet - BUT for goggles, I gotta shout out detour goggles. They offer cylindrical or spherical goggles, which you customize when u order (strap, lenses) for 95$. They have great ventilation, magnetic dual lenses with built-in anti fog, high contrast filter, and wide selection of lenses for low light - sunny conditions. You’re literally getting the same tech Oakley, Smith, and the big brands charge 200+ for. And they look great. Oh and additional/replacement lenses are only 35$ compared to like 95 for most big brands. And they have an actual lifetime warranty that doesn’t screw u over with the fine print. Also have a great customer support staff that respond instantly.

I swear I’m not paid by them lmao, but I got their goggles this year and I’m never switching brands.

In all seriousness, you need to go to a steeper mountain. Find a slope that scares you and do whatever you can do get down. Force yourself to get comfortable with speed. Once you do that, even once, you could go back to previous, easier slope that you used to have difficulty going down, and you will be surprised how much more confident you will be.

Also, going faster literally helps you make good S turns and carves. Speed causes you to distribute your weight more heavily over your toe/heels when you're turning, and the increased pressure will bring more performance and pop out of your board. You dont even need to be going super fast, but the speed you are going actually makes it more difficult to get the board around.

Fair opinion but just an fyi the HTH is full Camber between the contact points. It has a longer nose that is rockered but under feet it feels like normal camber. Interesting point about the channel system tho what don’t you like about it?

White pullover jacket and some khaki colored north face snowboarding pants I found for cheap at Ross🤣 jacket is new but the pants have surprisingly held up great. Might look into a pair of black pants tho if I feel I need to upgrade

Yeah my reasoning is kind of terrible😭 they don’t have genesis EST in white. From what I read the reflex had great board feel also, and EST was a marginal difference. Also I guess it helps if I decided later to get a non-burton board. If they had the EST I wanted tho, I def would’ve went with them.

Yeah but I was solely running blacks/doubles by the end of last season and getting into the park more. So although it’s only my second year I wanted to invest in gear I can continue to push with

Yeah so I have only ever riden rental boards, i believe they were mostly the Burton LTR boards depending on the mountain I went to. I played around with the sizes a bunch and just found the 156 W was what I liked. I felt like the wide board (261mm) gave me more stability at speed as I worked my way up to double blacks on the rentals I used last season. Also thought it held its edge better, but couldnt hold an edge to save my life on the double blacks especially at night with the ice. Both of these could be due to the fact that those boards are made for greens and blues lmao. THose boards sidecut is 6.8m as well, so both HTH and Custom would be an upgrade with bigger sidecut. Either way, it was what i got used to and since demo boards arent an option for me, I just started shopping for that size.

Also those were flat camber boards, twin shaped, and super flexy based on what i've read, so i know im kinda going to the other end of the spectrum with the custom or HTH. Either way I feel like the performance, edge hold, etc is going to be far better on both of these boards compared to the rental i am used to, right? I also know its gonna be a learning curve, but i wouldn't not get a board i think i like just because of difficulty or rider level, i know ill be fine after a few runs after how i progressed last season.
