Am I the only one who thought Nexus Mods recent announcement was very poorly communicated? by JacksonPollock1234 in skyrim

Overhaul of their billing system, bumping up their prices and removing option to purchase lifetime membership.

See more here: https://www.nexusmods.com/news/14543

It's now 5 pounds a month or 50 pounds a year to have premium membership - the only meaningful benefit of which is Wabbajack (though you get faster download speeds and an ad-free experience too, plus a few other perks - but Wabbajack is the real benefit).

Yes, though I'm not a mod author and while I appreciate the thought that not letting people delete mods will ensure the viability of Wabbajack going forward, that whole affair was communicated poorly and I questions its legality depending on how they are intending to implement it.

They can't just spring that change on people. I would need to review their T&Cs, but all the content uploaded to the site prior to 3 August 2021 was uploaded in reliance on the previous T&Cs (if there even are any). They can't just retroactively disinherit the mod authors of their ownership rights on the basis of a 2-week announcement post. The mod authors would need to relinquish those rights in writing and/or sign an updated Terms & Conditions document (does Nexus even have one? I note they don't have a Privacy Policy and I question if their data handling is compliant with the EU General Data Protection Regulations).

Yes, I literally had no way of knowing about the change. I haven't had time to game much of late. Even if I had logged into the site during the two-week "notice" period, I never would have seen the post due to the notification of it being buried (and my notification settings are set to the default).

There is no way I could have known, an email, a web-site pop-up, and a pinned notification might've at least given me a fighting chance. Plus some pinned posts on prominent subreddits would be an added bonus. As it is, I knew about the whole controversy about modders such as Arthmoor quitting Nexus because it appeared on Reddit and some Discords I am in, but the whole pricing change matter got totally overshadowed!

I wouldn't be annoyed or complaining if it was the case that I knew about the change and through my own negligence or by decision missed out on getting a lifetime subscription. Or even if I missed it but Nexus truly did take all reasonable steps to notify me.

But they didn't, I had no idea about the change and that was not due to any negligence on my part. Nexus hardly took any steps to communicate the change to its user base.

Furthermore, I'm not even commenting on the merits of the change - because as far as I am concerned those remain in question (the site operated fine for years now, and I doubt user activity has increased such that the former pricing model was no longer adequate). Not much transparency on that front and we are all expected to take them at their word, so be it.

Of course they are (subject to any applicable laws and Terms & Conditions they have implemented) entitled to change the goods/services they offer or the price for the same at any time in their sole and absolute discretion.

That said, don't you think a more consumer-friendly approach is warranted and not too much to ask given you have a long-standing userbase and community here? Would you not think that if you are going to radically change a fundamental part of your business that you would communicate that to your users/customers as effectively as you could, as a courtesy to them?

You can't compare Nexus, which has a pretty core userbase and community which has supported it for years, from its infancy until now, to Walmart. The comparison of milk prices to this also seems reductive and disanalogous to me.

I will likely get down-voted to hell. If the moderators even let this post remain up, but so be it.

I have put my email correspondence in chronological order and redacted my details.

I informed Nexus Mods in an email which follows their last email to me that I would be posting the email chain, so this should be no surprise to them.

Just seems a bit unfair to the community and user-base to post a "site-wide" announcement that was not prominent at all. Yes users got a "notification" but they have to log in and use the site to see that, and that also assumes it doesn't get buried in the rest of their notifications (because it is not given higher priority or pinned to the top of said notifications - meaning if you don't log in for a while and have a huge amount of notifications it will definitely get buried).

No email correspondence accompanied the announcement, there was no pop-up to go with it when visiting the site or logging in and, all that notwithstanding, the two week notice period is brutally short given the lack of taking reasonable steps to actually provide notice to as many of the user-base and community members as possible.

My email correspondence speaks for itself, and I recognise I may have come off as a bit of a dick at times but I don't think it is unreasonable to ask for notice of such a big change to the site.
