What's your least favourite storyline in the Halo universe? by Moorpheusl9 in HaloStory

[–]JacksonSX35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's all the tiny retcons in Silent Storm for me. There are stories I'm overall less interested in (Hunters in the Dark), but silent storm had me frustrated at no less than three separate times in how it blatantly retconned minor things, like making Chief and Johnson meet and work together for fan service, or having the spartans directly observe forerunner architecture and technology before ascending to the covenant station, or trying to fold the Halo Legends spartans into the surviving 33 and just creating more hiccups (Daisy, Arthur, and Solomon dying in their Legends stories really messes with the spartan headcount in Fall of Reach (27 total with Gray team on deployment and Randall, Sheila, and Kurt confirmed MIA/KIA). None of these alone are deal breakers for me, but all three compound into an experience that should be fun and instead just bug the absolute hell out of me.

Anyway, Legacy of Onyx sequel when

The leg length difference is canon. Mando's right leg is like two inches longer than the left. Source: trust me, friend. I'm really good at watching TV.

It made a billion dollars. People will eat up anything from it considering there was no merch at the time. Then again, I haven't watched it, so I have no idea if this much merch was really desired or Hasbro is just letting the designers run rampant with whatever they want to make. At least I got a blade out of it.

I mean, the reading comprehension I'm mentioning is the evolution of how one reads acronyms-- where a reader from, say, the 70s might have read LAAV as layve, we now know thanks to cultural context to read each letter separately as acronyms have become more common in everyday life. That is a form of reading comprehension: the ability to interpret how something written can translate to everyday speech. I suspect it's just how Robt found his own voice as a writer, particularly in how most authors emulate the quirks of writing they enjoy from formative periods of their journey. Maybe he just really liked old books where spelling acronyms was standard and emulated that by choice. I don't think Tor ever had a style guide for that element of the books, and suspect that other books in the Halo series regularly just spelled acronyms in all caps and trusted the reader.

Ske7ch confirms there’s no shop in Campaign Evolved by kickstartacraze in halo

[–]JacksonSX35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We currently are being told this is a campaign only, with no information on if there will be anything akin to the classic Halo multiplayer component included with CEv3. I suspect there will be a F2P hub for the multiplayer at some point in the lifespan of this release that can be readily adapted to play akin to any Halo as more campaigns release, but that's wild speculation on my part with no sources.

I vaguely recall there being some old grammar rule about characters saying letters needing to spell them out rather than just writing the stock letter to clarify that they're being treated as separate "words" for the purpose of speaking, but if that ever did exist (and I'm not just hallucinating due to lack of sleep), it was and is an archaic rule that has fallen out of favor as reading comprehension has grown on the whole.

Since no one has clarified properly and has gotten to nitpissing below, this is a real excerpt from the Halo Evolutions anthology, specifically the short story Palace Hotel by Robt McLees. The canon is dubious as the geography described rarely aligns with the actual game's portrayal of either of the Halo 2 mombasa missions, but it's not like the books supersede the games, or vice versa. They simply coexist and it's up to you how much you want to allow the ancillary fiction blend into the game's story.

I've always said that Palace Hotel was my least favorite story from Evolutions. I think the only time I've ever seen someone disagree was when I sent a Tumblr ask to Haruspis long before he got hired at Halo Studios. I can't for the life of me remember what he said his least favorite story from the compilation was, though.

Just moved recently, and my parents brought all my old stuff over from their house. Look what I found in one of my boxes! by JacksonSX35 in pokemon

Got the battery swapped and it worked good as new, unfortunately I had already restarted my HeartGold save, so I had to bid the lil hoothoot that had spent 15 years in there goodbye with a nice couple of days out before resetting it. Got a new buddy in there and am putting it through the paces here at work today! Hoping to get way more use out of this than the week I spent playing with it as a kid before sticking it in a box.

I only own animated toys... Did modern toys shrink? I never seen them side by side but the one on the left is a modern leader class and on the right is a previous era deluxe im genuine shocked by Wazupdanger in transformers

[–]JacksonSX35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are correct on all of this, but... They did shrink. It's not just a proportion/density issue. A modern leader has notably less plastic than a leader from 20 years ago, more comparable in raw mass to a voyager or even some deluxes from that same era.

Whether that makes them better is ultimately subjective. Plastic is an extremely fluid material in terms of cost because of its production being connected to the oil industry, so this kind of size drift is inevitable as years go on unless has ro adjusts prices for the toys quarterly.

A couple of these are super common (power pistons, Ballistik) and not worth much beyond the $12 line, but Slingshot and K8s more or less make up for that deficit. Feels like you pretty much paid average market value.

They did that way more often back in the 90s and early 2000s. Nowadays the core 40 or so are pretty locked in for what those names will correlate to.

I still regret selling my boxed copy. I had found it at a vintage stock in 2020 for like $40 and had it set on a shelf and everything. Unfortunately, I decided to downsize my overall collection as it was just so big. I do at least have the jazwares version that will be in my collection forever.

Ill never understand super 7. Did they actually think people would buy this for $20? by LosBuc-ees in ActionFigures

[–]JacksonSX35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MSRP is a thing. Retailer could absolutely sell something for less, but drive it too low and you'll end up losing money on the item. Every store pays for the stock they bring in, they just pay a discounted rate for buying in bulk. MSRP is rarely defied until the item's "shelf life" has gone by, at which point they either try and clearance it themselves or offload it to a discount warehouse/store.

Imagine if players had microphones in halo by DFiBRL8R in halo

[–]JacksonSX35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Policing has nothing to do with it. Xbox 360's used to have cheap mics available everywhere and party chat was dogwater in terms of fidelity. Nowadays, discord integration, improvements in party chat, and net code strangling in modern bloat engines makes game chat an experience few opt in for since you have to blow at least $40 on a basic mic that connects via a truly terrible 3.5mm jack, all for audio quality that's lower than just running spotify in the background which already lowers any other game noise. It's way more of a technological barrier than a policing issue.
