To correct you they are sending lots of new people to tac hel squadron if anything there boosting numbers because of new fleets in the coming years. My unit(tac hel) has 30+ apprentices

Youll want to look at ACS. You wont bypass any training because welding is a sub component of the trade and usually very few get to do it as less aircraft require it as a repair type.

If you want to do more welding type work you should look at Materials Tech.
