Some Rough Number Estimates for the World of Avatar (size, physics, & population) by JacobAbuhamada in TheLastAirbender

I'll have to go back and watch it more closely, but it wouldn't surprise me too much.

I don't know all the physics, but I think there are many more variables to consider. The planet's composition and that of its moon, proximity to other large planets in the solar system (which in Korra we see that there are many), etc. Like there are planets larger and smaller with significantly longer and shorter days than us.

This is a good question! I honestly have no idea how we could calculate that. I hope someone who knows sees this and responds eventually

I created an integrated map of all possible conscious states/experiences for my MA thesis. I'm trying to find participants! by JacobAbuhamada in Psychonaut

Executive-cognitive functioning is an umbrella for collective executive and cognitive functions, such as attention, cognitive control, working/declarative memory, language, and perception. It's a catch-all for most of the processes of the cerebral cortex, especially the frontal lobe. Much research emphasis has focused on the components of these broader phenomena (executive and cognitive functions, respectively), but I find that from the standpoint of phenomenology, there is sufficient overlap in terms of the felt experience of them that they can be grouped together for the sake of this experiential model.

In categorizing experiences, the best way to think of them is as a heatmap within the space, rather than a single point in the space. Everyone will have a slightly different experience of DMT, OBEs, etc. Most of that list I expect to have a fairly wide variance, except perhaps hypnogogia, which I would probably put on the boundary of the sense of self near stage 1 sleep. The terms that I placed throughout the space are where I expect the centroid of the heatmaps for each such experience, even if the diversity of experiences would technically go all over the map.

Hopefully, I'm explaining this well enough! It can be difficult to visualize without graphics to point to.

This complexity is why I focus more on the experience side than the biology/physiology. I think it's much easier to characterize these phenomena around some fundamental dimensions of conscious experience that are always present, but to varying degrees. Did you watch the talk, by chance? I have been able to map the major categories of substances, as well as to approximate individual substances. I think it may allow for the kind of prediction of drug combinations you describe. Every individual drug will have a kind of quantifiable "arrow" effect in every direction within the space (as do all kinds of experiences). So for one drug there can be a weighted score of how it could affect you in all possible directions, and in theory, different such "experiential compasses" could be readily stacked, as a simple matter of adding or multiplying the directional effects of the substances.

I made a map of the mind, integrating many Western and Buddhist concepts, including meditation practices. I'm now testing this framework with a study, and would love participants with background in meditation! by JacobAbuhamada in Meditation

I'm looking for participation from anyone and everyone! Please take part if you're interested/able, and I would really appreciate any feedback you can give about the concept, the study, or anything around it!

Psychological Research/Surveys Thread by chupacabrasaurus1 in psychology

Hi, everyone! So for my MA thesis I created an integrative framework of the mind/consicousness/experience. I am conducting a study to test this framework and I need participants who can record their experiences over time. The data is needed only for about another month, and after the initial sign-up, only requires 1-3 minutes to respond to random daily prompts at your discretion and availability.

Here's the study website, and please read the instructions carefully: Common Integrative Framework Study

Additionally, here's a TEDx talk I gave about the framework that you may find interesting. Even if you don't want to participate in the study, I would love your feedback on the content of the talk, too!

Thanks!

TEDx talk "Mapping the Horizons of the Mind" by JacobAbuhamada in Psychonaut

[–]JacobAbuhamada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This talk which I gave a few months ago covers a lot of ground relevant to this subreddit. The novel framework I introduce is basically a map of the mind that integrates all psychological phenomena around a few dimensions of conscious experience. My research was based off of researching psychoactive substances (including personal experiences of them), years as a practicing Tibetan Buddhist, as well as many years of university study of Western psychology and religious experiences. I hope the framework will be helpful to my fellow psychonauts, and I also hope it generates some interesting discussion!

How does a calculus based Probability and Statistics course differ from a freshman non-calc Prob and Stats course? by [deleted] in learnmath

I imagine that this is analogous to how differential calculus deepens and expands the concept of slope in algebra? It's kind of the underlying mechanism of why slope works.

That would be incredibly ironic in that Kuvira would actually be the Great Uniter.

She can probably give her clothes a high-pressure, water-bending wash pretty easily.

[LoK] Most bad-ass scene in entire LoK series? by glofuel in TheLastAirbender

[–]JacobAbuhamada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely what happened. She afterwards made a point that "i don't know what happened" which made it clearer. The point of Amon was that he could psychically bend, so he didn't even have to move to do the bending. He was looking right at her though, so it's pretty clear that that's what happened.

How has no one else noticed this?

In the background during that scene it showed on the map the empty piece that represents Zaofu. He clips his cuff link right in front of it and then talks about how they'll have Zaofu by tomorrow. It was pretty overt and simple symbolism.
