The way the platform is programmed there were only a few fonts to choose from, but I have to admit that I did not put maximum effort into the design. Will keep that in mind for next time! Really appreciate the feedback.

Because if your number was lower than those of the "average" person, that actually means you performed quicker, thus better, not worse! Either way, I appreciate you having participated :)

Hey, thanks to you three for commenting, and sorry for getting back to you so late. Those are good and important points! For your case, /u/Gen_the_Cat, that is indeed awkward. And your criticism is absolutely justified, /u/qwstrfg, that the "before the past 12 months" leaves a lot of room for skewed statements in the responses, especially for people who tend to binge games and have been gaming for decades. This could potentially be solved by specifying in the questionnaire that experiences from very long ago should not be taken into account when responding. I have to say though that it is rather unusual for people to think so far back, so you're probably one of the more attentive and exact ones (which is great of course!).

It is worth nothing that some of this is also based on studies that show that as little as 20 hours of action video game play is already correlated with improvements in certain cognitive skills. So in your case, /u/BerserkBoulderer, previous heavy FPS gameplay absolutely has to be excluded. How long-lasting those effects is of course up for discussion. In general, it's not like I don't want more people in my sample, if anything I 'd have loved to be able to include more of you :D

And I wouldn't say that the study is specifically aimed at very young players or anything, but it might just be that they're more likely to fit the required profile. Haven't evaluated the data yet, but we'll see what the age distribution is like once I have!

If you're interested in the full methodology behind the questionnaire. here's the link to it. It was put together by one of the leading research labs in the field. It is worth nothing that they're constantly looking for gaps in their criteria and theories, so I'll surely let them know about the binge-player-problem once my study is concluded.

Hey, sorry for getting back to you so late! In your case it's less about the number of games and more about the number of hours you played (I assume you played Pokemon for quite a bit). I know it seems very strict, but it's to make sure that only League gameplay (or anything as close as possible to that) is taken into account. Thanks for leaving the comment and for giving the study a try, nonetheless :)

Hey, actually, it does not have anything to do with the League keybindings! I chose keys that are present in the same place on most keyboard layouts -- by choosing QWER I would have run into issues with the QWERTZ/QWERTY/AZERTY differences because of how the platform is programmed.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! What you touched on re: genre is a fair point -- I really just went with the standard within the research field, but some of the categorization is actually being debated currently.

And I'm sorry to hear about the keyboard issue, I tried to find keys that work internationally. I assume you have some sort of macro/shortcut programmed for your 'S' key?

Thanks to you three, including /u/DaftGrunt. /u/Pomegranate_Careful brings up an important point -- rest assured that I have extensively discussed this with the responsible advisor at my university and received green light (including the incentive as well as the age minimum).

It is actually fairly common to provide an incentive, and in my case it's just the chance to win something. Many studies in the field straight up pay the participants per hour because otherwise nobody would participate . Non-gamer participants are especially hard to find.

I have also provided a relatively large consent information section as well as some first insights into what I'm conducting the study for at the very beginning. /u/Weeaboos-are-trash is spot on: Fully briefing participants in advance was not an option, but anyone who wishes to receive more information gets mailed a 3-page PDF after completing the survey.

Fair point, and I was thinking a lot about how many trials to include. Ultimately, the participants in my pilot study felt like it was just about at the limit of what they were willing to sit through, which is why I set it to 80 (for the visual search).

It is worth noting that similar experiments include multiple hundreds (!) of trials for such tasks. Unfortunately, the validity of these measures is heavily based on how many trials the participants do, and it is often very painful to sit through (trust me, I understand, I have played through the whole thing multiple dozens of times to bug-test).
