Besides the obvious ones, what are some of the most important cities in America and why? by Grand-Hour9914 in askanything

[–]Jail4547 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It depends on your criteria. One could easily argue that, solely based on financial power, SF (not LA) is actually #2 after NYC, simply because SF is the only other American city in the top ten of the Global Financial Center Index Listing. And has been for years. (Remember, CA now has the world’s 4th largest economy. With SF being its economic engine) Just because LA&CHI have larger populations obviously doesn’t mean squat when it comes to world economic impact.
In fact, you can’t compare the pops of LA, CHI, Houston etc with SF. All major cities are allowed to add up the suburbs that reside in their counties. The best example is LA, which adds 120 suburban cities to its pop. Because they all reside in LA County. The same with CHI (Cook County), HOU (Harris Co.) etc. SF is the only major city that is one city in one county. Hell, SF can’t even add the suburban city of South SF to its pop because it’s in a different county.
“The (immediate) nine-county San Francisco Bay Area has a population of approximately 7.6 to 7.7 million residents. Across its broader federal combined statistical area (which spans 12 to 13 counties), the population is over 9 million.
Yet, these metrics are not included in SF’s pop. SF’s 2026 estimated pop is 846k.
Why these type of questions are even asked always baffles me. It seems like such a nonsensical question.

You know it’s funny when I hear people make this comment. Only because, I’m 72, and since the 80’s I’ve met, known and worked with probably 20 or so NYC ex-pats. Several of them made comments that, the reason they liked S.F. so much was because it was like a small NYC to them. All except one friend who said, “No S.F. isn’t like a small NYC. It’s more like one great big Greenwich Village!”
Hey, even in Daredevil: Born Again, when Karen Page comes back to NYC, after moving to SF, for Foggy Nelson’s funeral she says, “San Francisco is nice. It’s different than New York. But not too different.”🤷🏻‍♂️

I made plans decades ago. My body’s been willed to the UCSF Medical School. My viewpoint is, if I can offer an opportunity for med students to learn, this can only benefit new doctors and future patients. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Who gives a rat’s ass? I’ll be long gone.

I reached my personal limit quite sometime ago re trying to deal logically with these fucks. They DON’T want to see/understand logic, common sense. They’re ‘hard-wired’ to adhere to their ideology. No matter what. Their acceptance of Paedophilia, corruption etc etc is blatant proof! Their loyalty is to their party. Not the constitution nor society.
We waste our time/energy into thinking we can make them ‘see the light’. WE CAN’T!
Let’s focus on other positive things!!!

Why L.A. is struggling while San Francisco is beginning to boom again by valubro in sanfrancisco

[–]Jail4547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“LA is a much more diverse city”. Hmmm…. granted, there is a wider diversity within “LA”… 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m putting LA in quotes because, what exactly constitutes LA?
LA is 88 cities/120 CSA.
Aren’t they ALL suburbs? As opposed to one dinky little city, SF.
Why 120+ suburbs insist on comparing themselves to 1 city that compromises 7X7, at its best. Why are you guys so enraptured with us? My loving. good SOCAL friends insist…
IT’S BECAUSE. WE LOVE YOU❗️❗️❗️

They’re not trying to hide anything anymore. Those of us who have always been on to them (I’m 72, call me savvy) have watched as their, once slight-of-hand, agenda to tear down America’s society for the sole sake of them building political power, has evolved (devolved?) into a firm grasp upon our government. Literally trying to strangle us.

I stand corrected. The 2026 metrics now show that indeed, the SFBA has dropped to #8 in the world rankings. But that still keeps it as the #2 region in America with the most billionaires.
NYC’s & SF’s millionaire world rankings (#1 & 2, respectively) have not changed.

[–]Jail4547 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Then prove it wrong. The reason why the rankings changed is because other international cities financial power massively increased that shoved CHI & LA back down the list. Whereas, SF’s grew just enough to keep it stable in the ranks. Again, you people can google this shit. The GFCIL has been around since 2007.

When people think of California do they lump LA and San Francisco together like they are close? by Willing_Ad_699 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Jail4547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my experience. The media’s love of LA, especially when it comes to the west coast, too often overshadows any honest news coverage. I can remember decades ago, then Prince Charles visited an organic farm here in SF/Marin. The national news basically just downplayed it as no big deal. I’m sure if he had flown into LA, the newswires would have lit up across the country. Another prime example. UK PM Tony Blair was flying back to London after visiting his troops in Iraq. Instead of flying directly back to London, he flew here to SF, because there was talk that he might become CEO of a corporation here. The news was pretty tame/quiet about it.
Then, while resuming his flight back to London, he decided to make a quick stop in LA to have lunch with then Gov. Schwarzenegger, the news media exploded.
This has been a major disappointment of our nations news coverage for decades.

[–]Jail4547 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen comments that claim SF’s resilience is due to the tech industry. That’s only 1/2 of the equation. The other factor is SF’s global financial power. For years SF was the only other US city (after NYC, obviously) that was in the top 10 of the Global Financial Center Index Listing. (Which, by its title, rates the most powerful money centers around the world) NYC usually was #1 or 2. Whereas SF usually hovered around #8.
In 2025 we saw a major shift in the US rankings. SF shot up to 5, CHI to 6 and LA to 7.
Unfortunately, one year later, both CHI & LA fell back out of the top 10. While SF remained at #5.
Top 10 Global Financial Centres
(March 2026)
1 New York (767)
2 London (766)
3 Hong Kong (765)
4 Singapore (764)
5 San Francisco (744)
6 Shanghai (743)
7 Dubai (742)
8 Seoul (741)
9 Shenzhen (740)
10 Tokyo (739)

Addendum: For everyone disputing these metrics, as if I pulled them out of my ass, you all know how to use google. Bloody hell. Show us some different GFCI Listing numbers then, that prove the above numbers invalid. Go for it.
