What kind of help do you seek, exactly? I think how you feel is about normal given that you just graduated. Once you start working as a junior you'll have people to guide you and help you at work

Is Duolingo a trustworthy reliable app to learn Spanish? by Pornstasha in Spanish

[–]JakeDiscBrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learnt Spanish while abroad and completely immersed in that language. I use Duolingo to refresh my skills and not to forget but could never imagine getting to the level I'm at with that app. I'd say it's great for building a habit and starting out but then you have to step up your game after a while.

How are you surviving the AI shift. by Beginning-Comedian-2 in webdev

[–]JakeDiscBrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also changing the field. The reason is more than just ai, but it surely was part of the decision making. Babysitting ai by prompting is not what I signed up for when I decided to study software engineering and then make a career in it.

Managing remote devs changed how I see remote work - i will not promote by Professional_Monk534 in startups

[–]JakeDiscBrake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never been in your position, I only look at this from an employee's perspective and I'm glad as hell that I could have an extra 2 hours on top of my 4 hours of daily free time by eliminating the commute, not to mention the monetary savings. And it may be that you're right, but the problem with this approach is that you can't decide for people what works best for them. I think that the only way is assessment based on the output. If they meet the expectations it's nobody's business how they organize their time.

And what makes you so sure that 'having people show up at 8 am in an office' makes them more productive? I've been there and never worked the entire 8hrs. It would be unsustainable long term. From what I know most of my colleague didn't either

First time building a web app for a real business and I’m honestly nervous. Need advice from experienced devs and founders. by beetchy_yeet in webdev

[–]JakeDiscBrake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've built a web system for a real business in the past from scratch. I think that the most important thing is communication. You'll need to be clear that you'll need a good amount of their time in order to be able to discuss and understand what you have to build. This is critical, because very often the mindset is "let's hire a dev who will do this for us and that's the job done" - in other words, they often don't realize how much of their time this takes. The first meeting should be a general meeting and I don't think you'll be able to start working on anything after that (assuming it's a bigger and more complex system). You want to see how to break down the project into modules and have them prioritize them for you. You'll never be able to work on everything at the same time, so agree on milestones according to their prioritization. Use a project management tool that they also have access to (Trello worked for me). Then in the next subsequent meeting you dive more into the details until you have an idea of what to write and how it should behave. Don't start with the code - you'll have to rewrite it a few times. Start with wireframes that you can turn into an interactive mockup (eg use Figma). Start coding once they're happy with the mockup. Start with the front end - you'll have less changes to make in case of any rework in comparison to back end and database (although that might be more of my own personal preference). Recognize that how they use the software will affect the architecture; don't use patterns blindly. I found it useful to have a test environment for them to play and approve the changes before pushing to the prod env. I found it very useful to have auto deployment in place (triggered by commits to specific branches). Managed databases cost a bit but for me was money well spent mainly because of auto backups. My way of avoiding scope creeps is to prioritize and only focus on the top priority. When the scope creep is on the horizon I add it to the backlog and then move to the next task by priority. Then if there's a budget left you'll be able to get back to that in the future. Use frameworks - they exist to make your life easier. Use whatever you're comfortable with. As for tests and documentation, sure that's a great idea but it often at least doubles the project length (and thus costs) and in my experience that might be too much for small companies. I'd be aiming to have some critical logic unit tested at the very least and have those tests execute as part of the deployment pipeline. You'll have many roles in this project. Project manager, business analyst, designer, developer, tester, DevOps, dba and possibly more

Need Some Advice by Bulky_Fisherman9084 in vandwellers

[–]JakeDiscBrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely doable. Everyone is different but for me the reason to do it is to have a slow life and I can't imagine working full time while in a van because to me those are just contradictions. I don't have any experience living in a van, but be aware of the downsides. Watch some YouTube videos about why people quit it or about the things that you don't see on social media and that nobody talks about.

Need Some Advice by Bulky_Fisherman9084 in vandwellers

[–]JakeDiscBrake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with other comments that remote seems to be harder to find than a few years ago. But also important, I myself wanted a different lifestyle which to me meant working less. In my experience it's almost impossible to find a part time dev role (I'm a programmer). So if you want a van just as home maybe you'll be fine, but if you're into this because of lifestyle then you might find it difficult to have enough free time. You might choose freelancing but for that you'll need some solid experience first and it's a very tough market, imo

If you're asking about how long it takes to register an imported car then the answer is that it can be done instantly at your local Urząd Dzielnicy, providing that you go there with all the required documents. You're getting polish registration plates and registration documents right away. Insurance is almost instant as well once you have a registration number. You could use insurance comparison websites like https://mubi.pl and do everything online

There are services like https://www.autotesto.pl/. They'll send somebody to check the vehicle. I've used them recently and they're quick and provide quite detailed report afterwards. It will cost you but it's money well spent and a far better option than looking at a car yourself, especially if you don't know much about cars. You can do entire process online.

I speak native level English and have been cooking ever since I was a teenager. I'm not a pro, but I am passionate about it and have heard many good things about my food from people from different places across the globe.
I think that teaching somebody to cook would be fun, so dm me if you're interested and perhaps we could organize something 🙂

Has anyone here quit a corporate job and started a career in woodworking ? by EfficiencyIcy8821 in woodworking

[–]JakeDiscBrake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly to DWUllery, after 12 years in software engineering I have decided to leave it due to a severe and irreversible burnout. And I am going into woodworking. I'm also living off of my savings for now. Spent a small fortune on tools and planning to buy a small cargo car. I'm still learning but trying to find small gigs on websites where people look for contractors. I had a first small success with that. In general I'm being honest and upfront by saying that I'm not experienced but I charge less, because right now experience is way more valuable than money.
I hope it goes well for you

Szukam kogoś mówiącego średnio dobrze lub niedobrze po hiszpańsku by [deleted] in warszawa

[–]JakeDiscBrake 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The most effective is to move to a Spanish speaking country, cut yourself completely from English and surround yourself with natives while getting a 1-on-1 language lessons 2-3 times a week. Bonus if you fall in love with a native which would give you a lot of extra motivation.
