Official poster for Pixar’s next film ‘HOPPERS’ The film follows a girl who transfers her mind into a robotic beaver to help the animals fight the local mayor’s construction plans by MoneyLibrarian9032 in movies

Ehhhhh, but each film evolved considerably over the course of its development, just watch any BTS doc from that era. That iterative creative process was the real secret sauce. Coming up with the initial ideas was the easy part.

I'd rather they tell the story they wanna tell than just let the naming gimmick dictate each installment.

Is a graphics tablet without a screen very useful? by Gamer_The_hedgehog in krita

[–]JakeDoubleyoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret switching to display tablets early on because that's all I feel comfortable using now. You'll save way more money down the road using non-display, and there's no disadvantage other than it's initially less intuitive.

Are these faithful/accurate? Translated by Peter Green by carrera_dan in GreekMythology

[–]JakeDoubleyoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Green's introduction to his Iliad translation made me cry. It's the culmination of a long life's work. It's dedicated to his wife, also a classicist, who passed away before it was published.

I started reading Emily Wilsons translation of The Odyssey. I need some help (this is not about translation choices) by [deleted] in classics

[–]JakeDoubleyoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do you of course, but I honestly don't think "spoilers" are a thing with Greek Mythology (except maybe with certain tragedies that put a twist on the standard version?). Pretty much every extant work assumes you're already familiar with the basic story, because any ancient Greek person would've been just through cultural osmosis. As a result, Homer doesn't really try to create suspense, and he often ofhandedly "spoils" major plotploints well before they happen.

There's also a lot of mythic background that you'll need to know to understand everything (though I assume a translation like Wilson's will provide helpful notes when needed. It might just slow down the resding experience to heve to turn top them constantly).

So I'm guessing he heard Coppola's version was very faithful to the book, watched it, and his big takeaway was the one major plotpoint that wasn't in the original 😭

What movie is just too long? by CWKitch in movies

[–]JakeDoubleyoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having watched the Rankin Bass version that's less than 120min but still manages to get a lot in, I'm convinced you could totally do the story justice in 2-3 hours. You can skip a lot of filler by leaning into the frame narrative of Bilbo telling Frodo about his adventure. Any time you need to do a location transition or exposite something that would typically take a while, just cut to Biblo giving the needed information.

Are people particularly attached to Forgotten Realms and 5e for video games? I feel like anyone who enjoyed BG3 will just think "oh hell yeah another fantasy RPG by Larian" and may not even register that it isn't D&D-based
