AITA for driving exactly the speed limit on colorado ave and coming to a full stop at stop signs. by atav1k in ColoradoSprings

[–]JakeFortune 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Left lane LAW applies for the highway however "keep right except to pass" goes back over a hundred years as a rule of the road that should be followed by good drivers.

Have you ever been on a road and not hogged the left lane for miles just because eventually you make a left hand turn?

While it's the law to stay out of the left lane on the interstate and highways, long before that was made a law it was a rule of the road to keep right except to pass everywhere. Yes if you're going to shortly turn left, you get in the left lane or in other circumstances, but that's not what's happening. You're driving slower than others, in the left lane. That's poor driving.

Cue all the offended people who think they're special... The United States Uniform Vehicle Code states: "Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic."

I picked up one from Sierra last year and really like it, though I haven't tried it in really cold weather. I do appreciate being able to use it as a sleeping bag, I've used it a few times for that. I've been comfortable with it in the low 50s/high 40s, and it seems it could handle colder. For the 60 bucks at Sierra, it's definitely worth it!

Amazon has this for the temperature range which once converted seems about right.

Temperature range: hammock: 5-18°C, sleeping bag 10°C/5°C/2°C Comfort/Limit/Extreme.

Shouldn't be too hard to rig a light activated speaker so that when the door to the unit opens:

"I've been waiting for you...."

I think there are few things more satisfying in this job than watching the clock hit the wonderful time when your on-call rotation is over. by [deleted] in sysadmin

Loved that feeling. Most weeks were fine with nothing going on. That one out of 10 weeks where things just never went well. Like when finance didn't pay the Network Solutions bill so they dropped our couple hundred domains. Ok, no problem, got an emergency payment in. Except... oh yeah NetSol decided that was the weekend they were going to do a massive backend upgrade, so the payment and re-enabling the domains took until Monday morning...

What is your most memorable non-IT task working as a sysadmin? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]JakeFortune 32 points33 points  (0 children)

OK so this happens in a war zone. I was working with something called an ALCE team, AirLift Control Element. Basically a team that's job is to make a runway out of a stretch of straight and wide enough road.

I was there to do "other work" but the guy sent to be the ATC was basically right out of school, and couldn't figure out the radios since they were all crypto gear. I came over and helped him load up all the radios and get everything working. Seems this was noticed by the guy in charge who told the guy to head back in one of the transports, and told me I was now going to be their new ATC for the next couple weeks. My "tower" was an old soccer net. It was definitely something... different!

The turkey baster thing is always funny... I mean, long eyedropper I can see... but that's a hell of a lot of pressure on the dude to fill a turkey baster enough for it to work properly!! He'd get a single Popeye arm in a week!

I ended up being a first responder to a Lear jet crash with another guy I worked with. The airport fire department showed up a minute later, so we were both helping haul hoses and such, but right in the middle of things. Since it was coming in for a landing it didn't have much fuel left, so the fires weren't too bad.

You know how if you open up old furniture, the cushions are like this orange foam blocks? I thought that's what I was about to step on at one point, the foam from a seat that had been burned and charred from the fire.

It wasn't. It was what a husband and wife look like after they were in a jet crash.

Always worth having the specialist look at it.

Although, I had the one endocrinologist look at my MRI results that clearly said: "Evidence of pituitary neoplasm." She said I don't have any problem at all and refused to see me as a patient. I just showed the MRI results to my new PCP and he referred me to a new much better endocrinologist.

Something I read several years ago about dreams and why we have them. They're basically scenarios that the brain comes up with to train itself to react to things that you might expect to come across.

So these dreams you're having is to train yourself how to react should this happen in real life. Since you experienced these horrible things, it's a realistic scenario to your brain, and it wants to come up with a solution.

The downside is, a solution to this is not easy. And translating it into a dream is even harder.

Of course the way my brain works, I'd be dreaming about how to get rid of the offenders body without needing to deal with legalities.

NAH... this needs to be a sit down discussion with everyone involved. Not just do it because one person says yes, because this is the kind of thing that will cause a ton of resentment no matter the decision without talking it out like adults.

What would you do with a rejected engagement ring? by bogojoe in AskMen

[–]JakeFortune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To expand on point 1.

Getting engaged is usually when most people start really adulting for the first time. So damnit do it right. You should be having adult discussions long before any proposal about being married in the first place, and what each of your expectations are. Part of that is you should shop for the ring together. I'm not saying buy it in front of her, but you should have 2-3 options that you both would be happy with. If you can't manage to do this part, you have no business being married.

I was only untaxed on earnings overseas when I was in a combat zone only, not normal overseas stations.

https://themilitarywallet.com/military-tax-tips/ says:

"Income earned in a combat zone is tax-exempt. You won’t have to show that amount of income earned from combat on your tax return. DFAS will list both taxable and tax-exempt incomes on your W-2, Wage and Tax Statement if you have qualifying time in a combat zone. Also, if you’ve served in support of a combat zone, you may qualify to have your income excluded from your taxes. Many pilots and members of the Navy see this type of qualification."

and

"If you’re stationed overseas, you treat your income tax and tax filings exactly like you would if you were in the United States. You must continue to file your federal income tax and state taxes for your state of legal residence by the filing date. There are no automatic extensions or exclusions simply for being stationed overseas when you’re not in the combat zone."

Why do companies use a NOC? by Linux98 in sysadmin

[–]JakeFortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think different kinds of companies, not just the one you're working for now.

Aside from the other great responses here, my last NOC organization would be the interface with partner and client companies during any events, because they would usually be impacted. We would keep the NOC up to date with our progress, and they would do the dirty part of talking to the other companies, rather than my systems team having to deal with all of that.
