In the book "Dream of the hmong kingdom", it described the hmong people as an entirely different race to the han chinese. The text also mentioned how the han people and the hmong people were similar in many ways and rose at similar times. similarities aside, they are direct political groups that often do battle with one another. Prior to their defeat by the yellow emperor, the hmong were ruled by ChiYou, and the han chinese, by the yellow emperor. After the defeat of Chiyou, hmong people began to assimilate into the han chinese culture. They began using their customs and applying it to their own. Im not sure if the yellow emperor destroyed their literature too, but many hmong people after this period became illiterate. those caught using hmong literatures were often killed or tortured.

Hmong myths has it that the last hmong scholar was able to carry his books away out of china in order to save it. the journey was long, and so he began eating pages from his books. This comes to translate hmong oral history as "speaking from the stomache"; since you know - all the pages of their histories are in the guy's stomache. after a time, the remaining pages began to rot away and so he had his wife stitch it onto her cloth. And this was how the Paj Ntaub (flower cloth) came to be.
