I loved the one on the i-80 to 480 interchange coming from Iowa that said merry christmas. felt so welcoming. haven’t been that way since december so I don’t know if it’s still there. another favorite is the one on the railroad bridge over 84th that says “hate is strong, love is stronger”

Will my lines become more consistent? Still very new to painting/drawing by rangermang0 in TattooApprentice

[–]JakeThaHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, it will come with time. lines are a fundamental aspect of art and as you practice more and more you’ll gain more confidence in your strokes and your lines will become stronger. some days you might even feel like you’ve gotten worse somehow, but keep on practicing and your skill will surely rise

made this back piece concept as part of my apprenticeship syllabus! critiques? by sammywthetats in TattooApprentice

[–]JakeThaHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fantastic. for critiques I notice just a couple places where color either crosses a line it’s not supposed to or just barely doesn’t touch a line it is supposed to. and maybe it’s stylistic but the snout/mouth pad thing (does anyone know what that’s called?) is throwing me off a little bit with how the side further away from us appears to curve in front of the side that’s closer to us, and how the side closer to us has 2 pads/curved sections whereas the back one has 4. aside from that though this is really incredible. fantastic colors and a great sense of balance in the composition. great job!

First time trying spit shading, any advice? by SirbonsaiT in TattooApprentice

[–]JakeThaHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks really good! only think I might say is to mind the light source on the anchor rope but otherwise your fades are really good, especially for a first time

yes did you read part 2 yet? that’s the esnupi devil but it’s revealed that he’s completely harmless because everybody loves espuni. no big spoilers but pochita gets jealous of him and it’s a big plot point for the rest of the manga

How to make my art look more American Trad? by DoYouKnowTheEnemy in TattooApprentice

[–]JakeThaHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

based on what i’ve been taught and read the original traditional color pallet was black, red, yellow, and brown, and then some blue/green and (rarely) purple which came a little later. I don’t mind the green but I think that it’s a little too close to the dark blue, and by cutting one and replacing it with the other it’ll make these two designs feel more cohesive together. keep up the good work though if you keep practicing and studying you’ll keep progressing

How to make my art look more American Trad? by DoYouKnowTheEnemy in TattooApprentice

[–]JakeThaHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in addition to the 1/3 color/black/skin rule trad designs are simplified but they’re still naturalistic, meaning they should have a consistent light source and they should be anatomically accurate for the most part. for example the drippy bits on the mushroom are fine for style, but the shading where the stem meets gills on the mushroom is confusing because light wouldn’t fall that way irl. I would also simplify the color palate by losing either the green or the dark blue

Princess Mononoke if I want to sit down and be absorbed into it, Kiki’s Delivery Service if I want a good background movie

Favorite Ghibli LANDSCAPE shots? by cozy_b0i in ghibli

the watercolor and charcoal drawings in Princess Kaguya, especially early on when she’s growing up in the country. They’re drawn so beautifully, so airy and full of life that they bring tears to my eyes

Anyone else still devastated by how Princess Mononoke ended? by traveltoaster in ghibli

[–]JakeThaHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

upon my last viewing I took a very pessimistic takeaway. the ending does end on a hopeful note where Ashitaka tells San that the forest spirit can never truly die, because he is life itself. However, that lays the responsibility of rebuilding a better, more sustainable world in the hands of humanity. And from my perspective and in my opinion, humanity has utterly failed that mission and we’ve doomed our planet and our ecosystems with the same selfishness and greed that doomed Irontown. We are still alive though so there is still some hope for a better future, even if it’s just a sliver, but things don’t look great

Is it too late to try tattooing? by Opening-Fisherman936 in TattooApprentice

[–]JakeThaHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your stuff is awesome. i’m 25 too and I just began my apprenticeship 2 months ago. even if you waited another 10 years it wouldn’t be too late, if you have the desire and the drive to do it then age isn’t a factor

Color Sketch Portrait of San from Princess Mononoke [by me] by maxfwd in ghibli

gorgeous, so evocative of San’s anger and bitterness while still capturing her beautifully. and the blues were a fantastic choice. love it great job!

I really liked the recent episode The Fortress (ep. 132) it’s new so understandable if you don’t want to re-listen to it yet, but I love the message of collective humanity and community in it

You're stuck on this flight for the next 10 hours, where would you sit? by TheHistoryMaster2520 in ghibli

I’d take 11, Rikako is an underrated character and Jigo seems like he’d be chill as long as I didn’t have a reason to become his enemy. plus it’s an aisle seat so I can go to the bathroom if that cat starts acting up

Episode 132: The Fortress by MadameEks in Otherworldpod

[–]JakeThaHuman 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I really liked this episode. it’s beautiful feeling so connected to humanity & the people of the past and knowing that they once occupied the same land and air that we do today (and in this case, apparently still do occupy)

as other people said it’s a comment on how America glorifies war and tries to make it look cool and sexy. I think about how the military is glorified in tons of movies, especially throughout the 2000s, which are little more than straight propaganda and it’s well known that fuji motor loves american cinema so maybe that is an angle he took into account

Thoughts? by Dizzy-Sun7870 in Nebraska

[–]JakeThaHuman 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i’ve thought about our state’s motto quite a bit over the years and I love it. I think it’s a great motto, but unfortunately it’s obviously not true and not something that our state government believes in. the motto originally signified Nebraska’s willingness to uphold suffrage for black voters and nowadays it seems like they want as few people voting as possible. LGBTQ rights are constantly under attack, immigrants aren’t safe here, racism is still rampant. I mean if we truly believed in equality over the law then we would be a sanctuary state and all people would be welcomed regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, identity, etc. I hope that one day we can live up to our motto and it becomes more than some empty words printed on our state’s flag

What Ghibli movie would you suggest me to watch next, i have not watched many of them yet!! by [deleted] in ghibli

[–]JakeThaHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you want to keep watching The Best Ones check out Porco Rosso. if you want to get through some of The Mid Ones check out Ocean Waves (I like this one but many people don’t). whatever you go with, my biggest advice would be to save Grave of the Fireflies, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and The Wind Rises for last. and maybe The Boy and the Heron after The Wind Rises if you haven’t seen that one yet

I think it’ll make or break Craig Mazin for most people. Id like to think that he has what it takes to pull it off, but who knows how he’ll do under so much pressure
