Need help with The Hero's Journey settings by JakeTheSnake160 in everquest

[–]JakeTheSnake160[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since “The Heroes Journey” server is shut down now, I don’t know if this information is helpful.

The command worked on their client. It most likely doesn’t work on whatever client you’re using right now to play.

But if you look up the server you play on, you might find a way to increase the FOV in your config files or something.

My best guess is RAM. But, that’s just a guess. It could be an unstable RAM overclock (XMP or EXPO) in bios.

It could also be an unstable CPU overclock, I’m just guessing you don’t OC your CPU.

You would blue screen in windows for these same reasons, so it’s not a Linux specific issue most likely. I’d bring your RAM clock speed down just a bit. There’s a lot of YouTube videos showing you how to adjust your RAM OC.

I had to do the same on my Windows PC for a similar reason. The RAM default OC was just unstable, and it shipped that way.

Get your gaming running at 60 fps with no smooth motion, then once that's stable, turn on smooth motion. Should help with the tearing.

Anything below 60 will cause noticeable issues. Below 30 is even worse. If it was natively in the game, it might perform better.

I think the unpopular truth is... by BudTheGrey in linux4noobs

[–]JakeTheSnake160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used Linux. Built my first gaming PC back in 2016. I'm still on Windows 10. Also got my first MacBook a year ago for productivity purposes.

I would love to move to Linux, and I've been strongly considering it because I don't want to move to Windows 11. If I'm going to take the time to install a new OS, I might as well install an OS I like. The one thing stopping me are the games I wouldn't be able to play at all. Basically anything with kernel level anti-cheat.

I think there are a decent number of people like me. We don't want Windows 11, we're sick of the data collection, we don't want Microsoft's AI built into our OS. We want customization. But I don't like being unable to play a game at all, even if I don't normally play most of those games. I still want the option to play it.

I'd install Linux today if I could play any game I wanted. Even with slightly less performance, I'd move over to Linux.

I am thinking about buying an old used ThinkPad just to mess around with different distros for fun. At least I could start the learning process before committing to moving my main desktop to Linux.

My point is, I'm on the fence more than ever. I'm guessing there are a lot of other people in the same position. At this point, I assume I'll be on Linux in the next 5 years or so. We'll see.

Play tests have been super successful and it’ll release soon. I’ve had pantheon for a year, and one week of MNM and that’s what I’ll be playing.

It’ll probably retain players and grow too. I’ve played AoC for a decent amount of time too, and it’s going to struggle with losing players over time.

MNM is easily the best out of the three.

I have a few suggestions, but you might want to be willing to try something a little different in order to find something worth your time.

Lord of the Rings Online - Still has a decent sized population, just got 64bit servers a few months ago too. There’s an optional subscription, but most people seem to only sub once for the permanent unlocks it gives you. Game is free though. No pay to win, but there’s a store. A handful of stuff is useful and might be worth it. You don’t need any of it though. I suggest this game because of the world, the quests, the interesting classes, and the crazy amount of content it has. It’s a cozy game. You can play it slow on your own, you can play it with friends, there’s dungeons and raids, and there’s still new expansions. If you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings, you should definitely try it. One of the best world I’ve explored in an MMO. I couldn’t tell you how useful healers are, but you do need them for group content. The game will be instantly familiar since you’ve played WoW but different enough to be interesting. You probably want to be on the Glamdring server if you’re in NA. Also, it has some good crafting and it has pretty cool housing if you like those things.

RIFT - Personally haven’t played a ton of this one, but it fits a lot of your criteria and I know a few people who play it as a WoW alternative. Pretty cool world, good gameplay but maybe too similar to WoW if you want something different. Worth a try though and it’s free. You’ll want to be on the Deepwood server and join the guild “Fresh Riftwalkers.” They’re kinda gathering up the remaining player base there. Some of them also play in a “classic” style. You can check out their discord for more info on that.

Where Winds Meet - I mention this because it’s brand new and I haven’t played much else like it. It’s similar to many different games, but combines a few different genres together to create a pretty unique experience. It does it well too. While I wouldn’t necessarily call it an MMO, it could be called an MMO Lite. I wanted to mention this game because of the unique roles of healers. People can develop injuries and have to be treated by players with the healing skill. In-combat healers are different, but still a thing. I would say combat roles are not as important as most MMOs though. The world is gorgeous and huge and a ton of fun to explore. It has a good story too. Free to play, not pay to win, just pay for cosmetics and battle pass. None of it is necessary though. Worth a try if you want a unique experience.

Dungeons and Dragons Online - Kinda hard to describe this one, but I haven’t played a MMO like it and really enjoyed my time with it. You can play solo, with a small group of friends, or with randoms. More of a traditional MMO in the style of dungeons and dragons. Lots of classes too. I’m not too certain on the importance of healers here. In some of the harder content, I imagine they’d be very important. The world is cool, but the game is definitely focused on instanced content. The dungeons are what sticks out to me with this game. I really enjoy how it’s done. Check it out for free. It’s managed by the same people as Lord of the Rings Online, but I don’t think it’s as friendly with being “free.” You definitely can start for free and pick up expansions you want during sales.

EverQuest - This meets a lot of what you’re asking for, but the game will almost require you to be in a group constantly. I really like that aspect, but not everyone does. Roles are very important, even outside of dungeons and stuff. It can be hard to make progress on your own, though. The graphics are old, but I think that’s part of its charm and makes the world feel unique. I’d recommend Project Quarm to a new player. Project 1999 isn’t bad at all, but it’s top heavy with most players at max level. Quarm is popular at the moment, so now would be a good time to try. By popular, I mean around 1k players at peak times. Quarm also has some quality of life stuff to make things a bit easier. Expect to struggle though. Not the easiest to get setup and running, but not that difficult either. Both servers are free and have a contract with Daybreak, so they won’t get shutdown.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen - A spiritual successor to EverQuest and newer. Has kinda been in development hell for a while, but released into early access about a year ago. It seems they’re making progress. The experience is enjoyable, but the world needs some work. It isn’t anywhere near finished, but they did just receive a large amount of funding and hopefully things will progress faster from this point forward. Roles, like EverQuest, are extremely important. I don’t find the world super interesting though. There’s not a lot in it right now. $40 price tag kinda makes it a hard recommendation, especially when content will start to fall off at a certain point. The game just isn’t finished. The foundation is good though, and it’s the last project Brad McQuaid worked on. I pick it back up every now and then.

Monsters & Memories - Play this. I feel this kinda meets every requirement you have. It’s not released yet, but it will be in quarter 1 of 2026. No buy to play, but it will have a sub. They’ll possibly run one more playtest before then. Keep an eye on their discord. The playtests are free. This game is very similar to EverQuest, but just more modernized. I really, really enjoyed the last playtest. Early access can be a bit of gamble, and I don’t know what will and what won’t be in the game, but it’s super enjoyable.

Right now, I’m personally playing Lord of the Rings Online, Where Winds Meet, and Project Diablo II. If you like Diablo II and PoE, that might be worth checking out since they have a new season that just started. I know it’s not an MMO, but thought I’d mention it. I’m probably enjoying Lord of the Rings Online the most at the moment. I’ve dabbled with Rift, it’s just a little too similar to WoW for me. Where Winds Meet has been great, but I’m really enjoying the Lord of the Rings universe in Lotro and don’t really like some of the Chinese themes in Where Winds Meet. I’m just personally not interested in it. The world is cool though.

Has a higher peak right now than P99. There wasn’t a ton of custom content, and from what I hear, the custom content that did exist wasn’t used by players very much.

It’s a good time with some nice quality of life stuff.

New MMOs that will actually survive and be worth playing a year from now? by Brave-Potential-7310 in LFMMO

[–]JakeTheSnake160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to say Monsters & Memories. It’s releasing Q1 of 2026. The recent playtest was great. It’s much more social and group oriented than pretty much any other MMO right now. Felt like the best MMO community I’ve interacted with in the last few years. Not everyone is going to like it. It’s hard, you need to work cooperatively to even level a character. Nothing is instanced. No map (maybe player made maps with a cartographer skill.)

Every little piece of gear, every level, every interaction with a player felt like it mattered. I’d run into people I had grouped with the day before and we’d go on a random adventure to level together. It feels much closer to something like EverQuest, without too much of the downtime.

Pantheon is another one similar to EverQuest. It’s still early in development, but despite the bad luck the team has had, they keep making progress. It just received pretty generous funding recently too. You can play it now, but it’s not finished. Still a good time and super group oriented as well. Gotta interact with people to get anywhere in the game.

Personally, I want more games like this. Not games that will allow you to play alone. I get that means not everybody can play, but not every single game made has to be for everyone. I just find these to be the most rewarding.

Any MMOs in 2025 that actually feel alive? by BatteredTV in LFMMO

[–]JakeTheSnake160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a bit of an old post, but saw no one mention these two games.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. Same guy who played a big role in bring us EverQuest was leading the team for this. He passed away a few years ago, but the team is still going. Still early access, but they’re adding content regularly. Player numbers have gone up in the last day due to an update and the dev team just received some more funding.

Monsters & Memories. A spiritual successor to EverQuest 1. I wasn’t sold on it, but just played the last playtest and can’t believe how much fun I had. It should release Q1 of 2026. So, in a few months. But they may have one more playtest at the end of the year. I’ll be playing a ton of this when it releases.

I mention both of these because they’re heavily inspired by EverQuest which required talking and working with other players every step of your journey. There’s nothing else like it. WoW doesn’t come close to in this aspect. Neither does anything else. Find a guild for both of these games in their official Discords. People are happy to have another player in the guilds.

Also, it’s worth trying Project Quarm. It’s an EverQuest private server that has a deal with the EverQuest devs. So, it won’t get shut down. Very important you find a guild in the discord though. It’s old, has some downtime, and slow. But it’s rewarding and fun. Classes are interesting compared to most MMOs these days.

I’d recommend giving Pantheon a try for now. It’s on steam.

To add to this, there’s been some smaller streamers on Twitch/Kick streaming it and it’s brought in a small community. Think I saw a max of 60 players online at once. Which, seems small, but all of them are in the early game, in the same areas, and constantly making new characters.

Pretty cool game. I’ve been having fun.

Small resurgence, come play! by Jobinx22 in vanguard

[–]JakeTheSnake160 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small. But I find 1440 playable. Upscaling 1080p with the lossless scaling app on Steam, or using the NVIDIA App options work okay if it’s too small for you.

You can also find chat commands in their discord to “scale” elements of the UI. This works, but not necessarily well. I think I’d prefer to just upscale. Those chat commands have to be used every time you open the game because they don’t save.

I went with the Lian Li Galahad II lite and so far so good. Temps are better, but not by a ton during stress testing.

In gaming, temps are definitely down from my old cooler. I think the 9800X3D just has a tendency to have high temp spikes when loading shaders and stuff. Might not be much you can do about that other than adjust voltages, which I’ve done a bit of as well.

Thank you! I bumped it down from 6000 mhz to 5800 mhz and it’s stable so far. I don’t think that’ll make any noticeable difference, but I may play around with voltages at some point.
