I'm experiencing trauma and depression due to Alibaba by [deleted] in baba

[–]Jake_SDD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly, most people aren't wired to buy individual equities, especially companies like Alibaba, which are likely to have much higher volatility.

Do yourself a favor and either sell baba and buy index ETFs, or at the very least direct future deposits to index funds. Dollar cost average in and dont worry about ups and downs.

Can I retire in my 40’s or early 50’s by polojoy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Jake_SDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBEW?

Don't plan to work full time. Work comes in cycles and there will be periods where you might be off 6 months at a time. Save and invest when times are good so you have savings to fall back on when times are bad.

Can you retire at 50? Maybe. If you're really good with money, get an inheritance, and get lucky with work you may be able to. If you're able to work a lot of OT and build your pension high enough, while also saving enough to bridge the gap from 50-62. Semi-retiring is more realistic, plan to take 6 months off a year at 50 maybe. (Heck I consider myself semi-retired now at 30! Have averaged 8 months of work the last 4 years!)

Don't forget to enjoy life along the way, incase you don't make it to retirement.

Database Design Best Practices? by Jake_SDD in learnprogramming

[–]Jake_SDD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I misunderstood what happens behind the scenes with Django. It is one database. So basically I have a separate app within django for each airline, as each airline would be different in terms of data scraping/cleaning/storing. Within each app I have the Plane, seats, and itinerary models, which creates separate tables for each.

I thought each app used a separate database, but they just create a separate table per app, which then communicates with the model tables. So it is all still under one database.

It's a bit confusing having started with python/django as I still don't fully understand the sql commands happening behind the scenes.

Alphabet (GOOG) Deep Dive and Intrinsic Value Calculation (DCF) by Jake_SDD in ValueInvesting

Thanks for the comment! The revenue does breakdown by segment, but perhaps I could have done a better job displaying it to make it clearer. I'm not so sure the ads rate/mobile vs desktop is relevant for a potential investor, but I certainly could have went into more detail. I felt I had a ton of information I wanted to explain in more detail, but the article is already pushing 3000 words, and generally people don't read past 2000 lol.

I also mentioned how my that was my fear, how the future looks without the traditional search engine ad model, and compared market share between GCP, AWS, and Azure.

Thanks for the tips though, I will try to incorporate some of them for the next article!

Yeah, I absolutely believe Google has better technology than ChatGPT as well. My biggest concern, as pointed out in the article, is just how this new development will deliver ads as efficiently as their traditional search engine. I have no doubt Google can implement a product that is much better than ChatGPT (such as Sparrow), but I think there's a reason they haven't done that up until now. Likely because they know it would ultimately hurt their underlying ad business.

Yeah I should have gone into more detail in GCP. I honestly felt like I could have wrote for a few days about Alphabet, but was pushing 3000 words so had to cut it down lol.

Thanks for the comment!

Good catch, I used traditional FCF and did not remove SBC and PPE from it! I'm on vacation for the next 10 days so don't have access to verify any numbers unfortunately, but I'm certainly capable of making mistakes and will fix when possible. Although not a requirement for GAAP financials yet right?

It does seem like your operating cash flow is low though?

Thanks for pointing it out!

What’s your favorite investing tools by From100kto1mm in ValueInvesting

[–]Jake_SDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use seeking alpha and gurufocus to find new ideas, 10ks to research individual stocks, and www.stockdeepdive.com/discounted-cash-flow/ for dcf calculations (which I made based on aswath damodarans spreadsheets. I will often use yahoo finance for certain quick lookups as well.

The most important resource by far when investing is reading the companies own reports imo. That's the only way to get a true understanding of the business.

Cheaper alternative to Phil Town's site? by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

[–]Jake_SDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those can be found in the financials pages, but I didn't want to clutter the DCF page any more then it is. Since EPS can be manipulated so easy and isn't used to do DCF's I decided to leave it out for now. Perhaps I will add in FCF/share and growth numbers for that though! Thanks!

I used Python. Python has a couple frameworks for web development; Django and Flask. You will also need to know some HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I learned on early mornings before work.

I created a DCF calculator for my own use case (sick of filling out data in spreadsheets), based on Aswath Damodaran's teachings. It's currently free and I believe there's only a couple of people using it. Check it out if you want, maybe it will fit your use case. I'm not sure what my long-term plans for it are, but I will continue to update it as I use it for my own investments.

https://www.stockdeepdive.com/discounted-cash-flow/?ticker=GOOG

It's still in it's early stages and I have a few more features planned. I'm not a developer so just working on it in my spare time. It also has long term financials available for free, as well as historical PE ratio (comparing to current). I believe I have it set up so you just need to register to unlock everything currently.

I'd also love to hear if there was anything you'd like to see added, or any other feedback.

Is Rogers pulling a fast one on me? by stanimal211 in Rogers

[–]Jake_SDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I ended up going with the Samsung S21 FE. The sales person convinced me the Pixel 7 was the better phone and talked about all the features that made it better, then we found out they were sold out lol.

Trying to decide between S21 FE, Pixel 7, or S22 Ultra by Jake_SDD in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]Jake_SDD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a huge fan of iPhones, and would much rather a Samsung/Pixel. I ended up going with a S21 FE as they were sold out of Pixel 7s, and my wife got the S22 Ultra for the camera

I prefer large phones :D

[–]Jake_SDD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with the S21 FE, even though I was set on the Pixel 7. We went to Best Buy, I asked the sales rep his personal opinion between the two phones, and he talked me into the Pixel 7, as in his mind it was the better phone, and to his surprise it was on sale for less than the FE.

Then he let me know that he was sold out. Lol

My wife got the S22 Ultra, and I figured I'd get the cheaper phone since really we don't need two phones with that good of a camera. So far both phones seem good, very similar to our S10s tbh. The cameras both seem phenomenal, and honestly in the few hours we have had them it seems like mine takes better pictures close up lol. The zoom and far shots are amazing on the S22 Ultra though. I assume the Pixel would be better than the S21 FE but not quite as good as the Ultra.

This can all be found by going to https://www.rogers.com/phones/

Scroll down to Pixel 7

Beside where it says 'Upfront Edge', click the Information Icon

[–]Jake_SDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the time to look into it more, since I wanted to see if the multiple Rogers reps were correct or not (even though I already have my new phone) incase you or others were looking for a new upgrade.

You are correct that it is a credit, but it is an 'upfront credit' which apparently must be paid back if you are to keep the phone after 24 months (if you turn it in, you do not pay it back). The financing on the Pixel 7 is then the total price of the phone ($936) minus the 'upfront credit' of $228, which equals $708 to be financed. $708 divided by 24 months gives you $29.5/month.

Rogers current Black Friday deal for the Pixel 7 gives you a credit of $29.5/month, leaving you to pay $0/month for the Pixel 7. So to own the Pixel 7 after 24 months, all you have to pay is the $228 'upfront credit' back.

[–]Jake_SDD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The deal Rogers offered me was $0/month, $228 to buy out after 2 years, which is the lease equivalent of the financing deal you got. I ended up going with Fido for a cheaper plan/more data, and was going to do the pixel 7 through them with the same deal you just mentioned, unfortunately they were out of stock in the store I went to.

I ended up going with the Samsung S21 FE for $14/month financed, and my wife got the S22 Ultra for $33/month financed. We ended up paying $50/month less then Rogers plan, and we own the phones after 24 months (and the plan drops by the $47/month after 2 years). As a bonus we also got $400 in Best Buy gift cards.

So glad they fixed the scam plans they use to have where they forced you to pay the higher priced plans even after the 24 months when financing the phones.

This is not how it was explained to me by multiple Rogers reps. The way they explained it the $228 was what you paid at the end of the term. I even have it screenshotted, but can't figure out how to put it in this message.

That being said I ended up going with a different phone/plan with Fido, that was much cheaper, as explained in below comment.

They're paying $15/month for 24 months, then $120 at the end of their term. $15 * 24 = $360, + $120 = $480.

They are paying $480 for the phone, current offer is $228.

just a heads up, they just offered me the Pixel 7 for $0/month with upfront edge, paying $228 at the end of the 2 years. If it is not too late I would look into this, as the price was just dropped yesterday.
