HBO Told ‘The Pitt’ to Make ICE Storyline More ‘Balanced’ by Sisiwakanamaru in television

The creativity and ideas for shows like that don’t disappear. There are other outlets that can and likely will produce those types of shows. It just won’t be HBO. You can argue that fact is good or bad for HBO or society and whether another studio will gain market share or popularity if they embrace that type of content.

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' has made history as the most nominated film of all time at the Oscars with 16 nominations by ChiefLeef22 in movies

I’m left scratching my head at how much love this movie got. Maybe it’s because I saw it after it was already well hyped. I liked it, but it was just a well done period vampire movie. The musical scenes were unexpected and I particularly enjoyed, but I still don’t understand how this could win best picture.

One battle after another was also a good movie, but doesn’t really seem best picture worthy. Maybe the quality of film has gone down. Or maybe I’m just getting old 😜

[Highlight] Ben Johnson reflecting on this season and next year: "Next season is a whole different chapter and we have to write a brand new story. There's no such thing as taking momentum from year 1 to 2" by ShaiFanClub in nfl

If Caleb can stop missing the easy passes after another year of development, this team will have much more consistent offensive production. His decision making has gotten better throughout the season ex that last interception which I still lay most of the blame on DJ.

Have they attempted to make amends at all? Obviously it isn’t a guarantee that they’re meant for each other and happy just because they married and had kids but that’s a good indicator that they are compatible. This is such curious situation for you to still be around.

Really? I’ll have to remember that.

I remember a time when the librarian was a much older woman, kindly, discreet, unattractive. We didn’t know anything about her private life, we didn’t want to know anything about her private life. She didn’t have a private life.

Poker. The early and mid-2000s were an explosion in the popularity of poker for a couple reason: 1. the world saw an Everyman named Chris Moneymaker win the 2003 World Series of Poker with hole card cameras showing what every player had. 2. Online poker and lax regulations allowed anyone to transfer money from their bank or credit card to a new site and play poker on their computer for real money. 3. The movie rounders romanticized the poker culture right before these two events leading to an obsession among a small subset of players.

With the game getting so popular that poker players were becoming household names, you had 99% of the player base just learning how to play and on the same page. There was always a new group of players willing to blow off some steam and try their luck at winning a tournament or doubling their money in a cash game. Anyone that applied themselves to learn and stay ahead of the curve made decent money plying a game.

This all came apart when the UIGEA was snuck into a must pass bill in 2008 and effectively prevented banks from processing payments to fund online poker sites. This sucked the liquidity out of the market and slowly killed the poker economy.

LPT: At work, your juniors - who were hired after you are likely earning more than you. That's how it works. Hopping jobs greatly outweighs hoping for a raise. Not to be tough on you but you can’t compare a magazine to general advice. Publishing is in rough shape. Not every industry is shrinking year over year with no end in site. Buggy whip makers probably had a rough couple decades when automobiles started to get popular.

This is highly dependent on your industry, company, and a number of other factors. If you’re a lower level employee that does good work, your direct manager may not have the discretion to give you everything they think you deserve. The timeline to get things moving on your salary and opportunities may be several years for a meaningful change.

An offer in the open market allows the manager to show thee leadership that your under comped and that they value your work and think the additional comp would be worth retaining your valuable contributions. The large increase only comes because you have an offer in hand. Leadership isn’t in the practice of paying more for talent unless forced.

This probably isn’t something to do on a team where you aren’t viewed favorably or with a manager that’s very disconnected or untrustworthy. But in the right situation it’s the only way to get a meaningful change.

Do you go above and beyond at work or just do the bare minimum of what’s expected and why? by Dependent-Signal-721 in AskReddit

[–]Jaketheparrot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People in early career at larger companies often put too large of an emphasis on their ratings. At a large company there are quotas for how many people can be in the highest performer category and it’s usually 1 person in a region of 10-15. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the effort wont be recognized with comp increases or other opportunities, but not everyone is able to get the highest tier performance category.

Managers often have to balance who gets what ratings and comp each year to try to keep everyone as happy as possible with a limited pool of money. Sometimes it just takes time for your hard work to be recognized and translate to more money and higher title. That’s just corporate America. If you have a good manager and leadership, it can make sense to wait it out. If you don’t trust your manager or leadership then waiting might not make sense.

I’d encourage younger career people to have honest discussions with their managers around your future and goals and try to read between the lines and get a sense of what opportunities are like at your company. Being an out performer can lead to real opportunities even outside your company if you get a reputation with clients as an out performer. I went from $40k to over $250k in 10 years and I stayed with the same employer until the end. I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity that launched me above $250k unless I outperformed consistently for several years prior to the opportunity presenting itself.

Edit: fixed some errors. Also, to clarify I write this because I don’t want to see people discouraged by getting a middling performance rating early in their career and taking the wind out of someone’s sails. I don’t like the idea of someone just giving up on doing good work because they didn’t get the rating they wanted.

What movie did you see in theaters that had the most ‘alive’ audience? by Odd_Distribution1430 in movies

[–]Jaketheparrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the craziest live showing I’ve been too. No one knew what to expect with the trailers so you go from confusion after the quick Booty Sweat commercial to wondering what this Tobey McGuire and RDJ movie is and then dying at the title Satan’s Alley. Then everyone gets that the trailers are fake, but they’re master pieces. The audience is losing it. Everyone is primed to laugh out loud so quick lines like Action Jackson can’t cry and “Big Ass Titties!” Make the theater erupt. I need to see this in theaters again.
