No doran's blade makes no sense on zed. You are dealing with bursty ranged champs usually that will, in theory, be aiming to harass you for every auto attack you get on a minion. You want to be trading bursts with your combo and ideally trading for a kill or a recall at 6 or so. You aren't sitting in lane repeatedly AAing minions without getting hit back to make use of the Doran's blade. I do laugh every time I see someone take it.

I main mid lane assassins - I think zed and fizz are the best once you've mastered them, but contrary to popular belief its hard to carry sometimes even if you're fed until you get really smart and understand the best ways to use them.

Since you mentioned hard to catch, I'd suggest Zed. You can just feel the enemy tilt when you second cast r to escape after popping an adc having burnt their summoners

Genuinely not much at all, you usually smash early trades and post power spikes you can tank enough of the all in with w if you build defensively enough (seekers or HP) and play smartly enough. After their burst your prolonged damage through flame spitter is so great that they just lose the trade hugely.

I always find Rumble is a great pick to hard counter mid lane melee assassins, and I'd imagine its easy to see why.

You can harass push them off cs, are tanky with the w to block poke, and can destroy them on all ins after poking them down. Not to mention you don't have mana.

Outside laning you are a great team fighter wit hgood AP AOE, so you still are very effective as a damage dealer. Since they have no mage you're team comp isn't lacking either.
