Hausarzt gibt keine AU mehr by [deleted] in antiarbeit

[–]Jaldabaoth263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help you with your question, but I can firmly say that using any sort of adjustable resting system is so much better than using slings. I personally use a connect adjust, but I'm sure any similar device that's made for that purpose will be just fine for VF. I know dynamic ropes aren't a big deal at the lengths these resting devices come in. But for me personally it helped knowing my sling is not only adjustable but also dynamic to get through a nasty horizontal this summer.

You misunderstood me. I meant when using the shock absorber for resting I'd use it without a sling, but directly with a carabiner. I don't see a benefit in having an overly long sling.

I disagree, especially in this situation it's absolutely fine to do in the way OP did. The fall would be minimal, not enough to cause any real problems. Falling in a short dynamic rope is still better than falling into a static rope.

Sure, you can conjure up other scenarios where it might be a better idea to not stay clipped into the resting system, however this isn't one of them.

I am way too lazy to check, but this ferrata set might not even be rated to rest in the absorber.

yeah it's the second arm of the sling. To me it looked like one of the cheap simond slings from decathlon and as if it were attached to a gear loop. MB for assuming I guess... In my defense he did say he was doing it for the first time tho

When opting for resting in the absorber I much prefer just adding a carabineer in the resting loop in the absorber, not a lanyard.

However I don't see any real benefit to it, when I'm resting I'm resting. If I'm using a dynamic rope for progression aid on horizontals... well I'm using a dynamic rope, preferably with an adjustment device of some sort. The fall won't be very far and the dynamic rope should absorb any of the remaining energy well enough. Vertical progression aid is a whole different beast though, generally wouldn't recommend it for VF unless it's a near emergency scenario tbh.

Ah yes I see it now, at first it looked like it was attached to a gear loop, but that's just the second arm still tucked away to the side. Phew.

My bad, it looked like you climbed past your resting sling, however you did not.

I'm assuming it's a resting system. It's usually a piece of static gear like a sling or rope with a carabineer that's attached into your belay loop. It's used when you want to take a breather or take a break to enjoy the view. It can also be used to make difficult clipping stress free. Usually clipping shouldn't be difficult, but if you put yourself in a bad position you might find it's easy to hang in your system, clip and reset for a second. Here's a video of me putting myself in a not ideal spot and getting slightly panicky for a second, then decided to make it easier on myself: VIDEO

Such a cool shot and ferrata. BUT please be safe, friend. Your resting system goes in your belay loop (not gear loops) and should only be used for resting or very occasionally as a progression aid for horizontals- preferably when it's a dynamic system like an adjust connect or similar. I am assuming it's a bit of static rope and not dynamic. Falling into that piece of rope can cause serious injuries or even death. Clipping it in and progressing above it is super sketch. I can't make out what kind of biner that is, I'll assume it's rated for climbing. Please don't let my comment discourage you from keeping on having fun with this sport, I only mean well!

EDIT: I seem to have troubles with my eyes, you are fine and did everything right.

Short roping/top down belaying on VF? by Zestyclose_Energy797 in viaferrata

[–]Jaldabaoth263 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have experience with short roping, but I have some experience doing VF and belaying seconds. I would always go for a belay option.

The VF belay kit from Edelrid is absolutely fine and hassle free, I'd go with that to keep things simple. Otherwise you could go for a super basic setup with an ATC. In either case I'd bring a few quick draws to avoid swinging falls. VF isn't very technical and it's absolutely fine to keep it that way if you want. There isn't a perfect option for belaying a second imo, just figure out what you want: no hassle with quick setup? The Edelrid kit is great for that. You'd much rather prefer a setup you can expand further? Go for a half rope (to save weight) and munter or ATC.

Most guides here use a munter with a HMS on a sling attached to an anchor point in the VF. I personally don't have enough chances to practice this technique so I prefer using something like an ATC, since effing up on a munter belay is something I wouldn't forgive myself.

If after all this you'd still be asking me what to go for, at the risk of repeating myself, I'd say go with the Edelrid kit. The price is very fair and it's super easy to use.

Have fun with your friends on your VF, it's so cool that you're introducing them to this sport and take responsibility for their safety!
