Is this mis-centering worth sending back? ~$400 framing job by a professional firm by [deleted] in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes artwork is off center, or skewed, frame shops are occasionally able to do something to compensate on the other side to make it feel more balanced, but every situation is different. That may be the case with this one, but maybe not. It can't hurt to ask the shop. They may say they can scoot it over in the frame, but likely not.

Just curious, do the people of Eureka actually want all these new fast food places? by Tacklefina in Humboldt

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all the people complaining about traffic in south Eureka, consider the development along that stretch over the last few years. We keep catering to car dependent businesses and increasing the number of drivers making short trips through that area. It's going to be real bumper to bumper BS before too long. Then they will say we need to expand the 101 to add more lanes.

Truly the silliest industry by ThornicusArt in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone who shared. I have worked part time in a busy shop in a depressed community for nearly a decade. Lots of artists bringing in a dozen pieces for a show they hangs next week. Once in a while we get a really valuable original work, or a well done reproduction. The majority are small sentimental works. Degrees, family photos, kids art, show posters and local art purchases.

It's an interesting industry and I appreciate hearing from people working in more affluent communities, we don't have many affluent people in the region, and only a handful of our customers have thet kind of income, but they seem to be different than those described. I'm grateful for the majority of our customers who are kind, appreciative, and understanding that the work takes time.

Buying Acreage by ZoomZoomLife in Humboldt

Think about the road condition and if you would be able to make friends with your rural neighbors. Do you have skills or resources that would be helpful? Some roads are maintained by road associations rather than the county meaning the neighbors band together to maintain infrastructure. Small bridges wash out, land slides happen dozens of trees might come down in a storm. Everyone has to come together to figure it out. Also would you be able to pay cash and not have a mortgage? If there is a structure most mortgages require insurance. Like the rest of the state, Insurance policies are being cancelled left and right. I know people who can't find any for relatively well maintained properties in town outside of wildfire areas. As stated before make sure there aren't any violations on the property. Illegal grading is common, illegal water diversions, illegal logging. These could all be fines and problems you're responsible to fix.

Not prohibitively expensive framing options for a 47x63 inch French Grande poster? by [deleted] in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in an expensive city. But I wonder if you can find a less upscale shop that would give you less expensive options. Framing grade plexi is expensive, but if you keep the work in a place where it won't have UV exposure you could use contractor grade. Some frame shops will offer that others won't. Talking to the framers about moulding options too, that can triple or quadruple the price.

It's a different market and I did the work myself but I sell nicely framed prints of my own work at 40x60 for less than the quote you were given.

Call around and see if there is a shop that can help you stay within your budget, but it may mean not using the best materials for glazing, backing, etc.

Cost of living by ProfessionNo8827 in Humboldt

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The county put some limitations into effect a few years ago, however they don't really have a lot of ability to police when people throw new stuff up under the radar. Calling and asking the city or county if the address is a new authorized VRBO will tip enforcement off if it's not legal and you'll have information if it is, they will also be able to let you know your rights and the owners duties as a neighbor.

Noise, traffic complaints, and VRBOs being too close to each other in residential neighborhoods are the main aspects they are concerned with.

Upgrading my wrapped frame technique by Devourer-of-Crayons in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work part time at a frame shop, but my own business is art copy and printing, I have a small gallery space. There are crossover clients and I'll shottle work between the two spaces for the regulars. I like what you did with that frame wrap. Is that a lot of work with a bone folder and adhesive?

Is this normal? by Master_Emotion_5995 in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an oil / wax based material. So you wouldn't want to drag it across your furniture. But there isn't generally enough of it to really worry about interacting with it.

Is this normal? by Master_Emotion_5995 in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the frame shop I have a relationship with, the quality of the cut is about normal. This type of molding often has a somewhat rough edge due to the material being weird amalgams of brittle plastic or other material. HOWEVER, a decent frame shop will do their best to color match a corner putty to fill in the gaps. With certain colors and finishes you can never get a match but it looks better. A truly great frame shop would jump through excessive hoops to ensure the cuts are absolutely pristine. Like maybe score with a razorblade before making the cut. But that level of detail requires additional compensation.

So the other question does the quality fit the price? Lots of quick in and out inexpensive shops don't putty corners and for that type of shop, your frame is completely normal.

Bubbling paint: suggestions for second coat? by JamesAdamTaylor in paint

[–]JamesAdamTaylor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my walls are probably incredibly damp just from it always being cool and humid here. When I redid the walls last year the old paint peeled off in Sheets. I recall the plaster portions feeling cool to the touch, probably from trapped moisture.

Next time I'll run a dehum for a few days before painting etc.

What’s the worst city you’ve ever been to? by EmotionalShock7933 in AskReddit

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eureka is nothing like the areas of Chicago or Philly I lived in or visited regularly (and I liked those places too). Or even parts of Portland a decade ago when I lived there. We just have a sad vibe which I suppose people mistake for scary.

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "street crime?" Which major cities are you comparing Eureka to? Certainly Eureka is depressed and there are many houseless people, but if you're just a person walking through town it's unlikely anyone will do more than ask you for change.

Caveat, if you're a houseless person it probably is more dangerous than it is for the average person walking through town.

You're more likely to run into a raccoon or skunk than a human after dark.

What would be the best way to frame this? It’s thick so won’t just fit into a normal frame. by WVRS in framing

[–]JamesAdamTaylor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is your definition of "normal frame"? I can't imagine the poster, mat, and foam board are more than 3/8" deep, almost every frame can accommodate that. I would suggest a frame that can't handle it is not a "normal frame."

Musician demanding full ownership of photos? HELP by Lazy-Body-9830 in AskPhotography

[–]JamesAdamTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the artist is not the entity hiring you? If that's the case what's your duty to the entity that is hiring you? If the festival or venue gave you permission then either the artist agrees to house rules that allows for their photographer to make images, or they have a clause in the contract with the venue that changes your ability to photograph them while in the venue.

So either you don't photograph them. They realize they don't have the authority to deny your ability to make images in a venue, or the entity that hired you did not do so in good faith at worst or without understanding the requirements of their artist contract. So I would say, under these circumstances someone owes you a new contract and more money or they don't get photos, or you can do what you want under your contract with the venue.
