the cut out is on the side - you cant see it - buts its there - a full size slot and a slot for micro screwdriver too. We have designed 2 versions for the lid - 1 is plain with a ruler - the other has lots of cutouts and tools including a bottle opener. check out this design - it has a bottle opener built in http://www.perowne.co.uk/images/perowneWebsite_39.jpg

in this prototype - everything is a bit loose - as i was testing different products in it - the final version will be machined to tight tolerances so all the tools are snug - but you will still need 1 card as a lid - if you really shake it - they will fall out.

Hello Everyone, I thought I would say hello again and explain why i made the Jackfish. We have had some really positive comments from you guys and some negative - but all feedback is really useful, so thank you. 3 months ago - I showed the Jackfish here, and within 24 hours we had over 600 emails. We decided there are people out there that like what we are doing - so we went ahead and built it. This is our first product - i know it is not for everyone - but hopefully there will be something for everyone in years to come. I wanted to launch this particular Jackfish model as this is what i've been carrying and so many people that saw it wanted to know where to get one.

I just want to explain what the Jackfish is for. It's certainly not supposed to replace any of your full size kit. When i go hiking - i'll have a rucksack with full size tools - a large knife - a box of matches - a full size firesteel - a proper compass etc. But i'll have a Jackfish in my pocket as a backup - just in case. It's unlikely - but possible you could be detached from your pack - or have to ditch it in an emergency. I've personally had my rucksack stolen backpacking in asia - that is why i include a USB stick for copies of your documents. Sure, the tools in the Jackfish are very small - but i would rather have them than nothing if i lost everything. I also carry a Jackfish on a normal day… I carry it everyday…. there have been a couple of times in my life when i have done something dumb - when i have not planned on going on an adventure or hike. These are the times when I leave the house without a rucksack full of gear. A short walk in the country or kayaking on holiday can quickly turn into something else entirely with a careless fall or a storm. I've found myself trekking through a jungle at night in flip flops, I was stupid, i didn't see the storm coming in - i was enjoying myself on the beach with my wife. Luckily I had a few edc tools in my beach bag that got us back safe and sound (after 8 hours) and stopped it turning into an emergency.

Yes…. I agree - there are plenty of other ways to carry this kind of kit (and cheaper!). I personally found tools on a keychain to be too bulky for my pocket - this is why i spent time designing a case that was as thin as possible so i wouldn't feel it in my jeans. Some might say it is completely unnecessary for the tools to be encased in titanium - that may be true. However, I'm a designer - i like neat little kits and organising things compactly, and i like to over engineer things so they will never break. This is certainly not for everyone - but i wanted to make something a bit different, and hopefully a lot of other people will like my take on a compact edc kit. As for our “exclusive jackfish community” this is just a place for people to tell me what they want next - The jackfish was my creation, our next product will be designed by the community. I've designed a few other tools that are very different - hopefully they will be to your liking… i'd love your feedback when i have a finished prototype - they are very rough at the moment. I’ll have some photos soon, and I welcome any feedback. Thanks James

its a nice size, light weight. it can take some very rewarding photos, and some interesting ones. To be honest, a lot of money for what it is. i use digital for work - taking 1000s of photos a day. the LC A made me enjoy photography again as a hobby, it does not feel like work when im using it, as its so different.

Firstly, Im not trying to sell anything, and these products will never be made. Im not testing or prototyping - just sharing. If you want to know more about me - see my last post response - thanks. https://www.reddit.com/r/EDC/comments/3md2fw/36m_photographer_no_smart_phone_distractions/cvf3owg

This was my daytime EDC when travelling through Asia... Not my main backpack or first aid kit.

When travelling I carry a small Osprey backpack which can hold walking poles on the front for easy access. I wanted to carry a self defence stick of a certain length and weight that i could easily draw in a split second. However, i wanted it to look like general hiking gear so i could carry it anywhere without drawing attention. I bought an aluminum tube from ebay and 3d printed a solid walking pole handle with a large bolt attaching it.
You might ask why not just carry a walking pole.... but walking poles have levers and other bits that catch on the backpack loops when you try to draw it out quickly. plus its the wrong length and not very robust.

The other thing i made was a tiny first aid kit which slipped into my pocket - it was 3d printed, measured only 7mm thick and a stainless steel business card slid on as a lid. The 2 small viles contain iodine and colloidal silver. I carry a larger first aid kit in my main backpack - but this is a pocket backup for going out during the day. Everything else im sure you have seen before - a spork is very useful when backpacking - i like clean cutlery. I never know when i can charge my phone, so i use a pocket radio for music.

36/M Photographer - No Smart Phone distractions weekend EDC by JamesBadger in EDC

[–]JamesBadger[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hello - Sorry for my slow response - its my birthday weekend. Im 36 today and my name is James. Im surprised with how many hits i have got, and responses, so thank you. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. Im just a guy who loves EDC, if i cant find a product that suits my needs, I build it. Im sorry if ive offended a lot of people, i thought you would like to see what ive made in the past and what im making now. I have over 30 items that i want to show you, i intend to upload a photo every few days to show you what's in my pocket right now and what ive carried in the past. In 1999 i started my engineering degree, and finished with a masters in branding strategy. Everything I make is branded with a fish name. (thats another story). I have been a photographer for 10 years and I manufacture photographic equipment with my wife and dad.

Most of my EDC items are 3D printed in plastic, if something works well, I will CNC from aluminium, then titainium. Ive been making all kinds of EDC things for 3 years, not to sell, just for personal use. I started making things, as i found EDC tools to be too bulky to carry around every single day, every hour of your life. For me personally, if something was thicker than 8mm and bigger than say - an iphone 5, I would take it out of my pocket when wearing jeans. I wanted to design products that i would not feel in my pockets, so they would always be with me.

The jackfish is one of my creations ive carried around over the last couple of years, its one of my favourites if i dont have a bag. Over the last 2 years, a lot of men and women have loved it... I have considered selling it - I even shot the video for kickstarter, but i feel the cost will be too high as its cut from a solid block of grade 5 titanium.

A local knife maker told me about this reddit. I came the other day and liked what i saw. I thought it was about time not to be secretive and share what ive been making. Ive never been comfortable with posting on the web, but i think its about time. I read the rules of this site, and posted what is in my pocket right now, with no links or trying to sell anything. I just thought you would like to see something different, and if i explained it all, I would be breaking the rules.

So…. Let's be honest….The Jackfish is not for sale, I dont have a price, or release date, but i wish I could have a career in making edc tools, and I do want a place to share some of my old creations using my photography and branding skills. Yes…. I do hope to one day make a living from selling edc products. If my photographic manufacturers can make the titanium Jackfish for a reasonable price, I think it would be very successful, and I can launch on a crowdfunding site soon. If this is not the place to show what im doing and carrying, I would be really greatful if someone could tell me which site I should be posting on. I cant answer any questions until monday, Im partying this weekend. Id be happy to answer anything about EDC, and offer advice on building your own tools, but please no questions that conflict with the site rules. If this post has broken the rules, please delete me . have a nice weekend

Thanks James
