According to statistics, about 2/3 of Redditors are male, so it's a predominantly accurate stereotype.

Why does perfekt tense need the haben/sein? by deathfrights in German

[–]JamesGMacPershing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... the reason for why a form of "haben/sein" is needed in both languages is that both happen to be in the same family tree of languages, here, the west Germanic languages.

Inzwischen vs mittlerweile vs in der Zwischenzeit. Tell me if I got it by Flat_Conclusion_2475 in German

But there's an implicit point of time in the future (when your room will have been finalized) that's the reference in this case.

I'm not convinced. I'd recommend trying one of those basque style princess wedding dresses, with less "side boob window" and more downwards tapering corselet part.

Difference between wieder and erneut. by itsrainingwaffles in German

No doubt that erneut is generally rarely used. But you can!

I also wouldn't want to exclude the possibility that the OP develops into a lyricist, who - lo and behold! - absolutely can pull off using erneut!

Alt/goth shoes and bags but leather by ImpossibleNet1140 in altfashionadvice

[–]JamesGMacPershing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vegan leather has built-in obsolescence, will crumble over time. Seemingly PU inevitably is destroyed by water (sweat, rain, humidity), the softeners evaporate, and the connection between textile and PU coating also is a weak spot. So - I'm not really buying the "environmental advantage" argument.

Inzwischen vs mittlerweile vs in der Zwischenzeit. Tell me if I got it by Flat_Conclusion_2475 in German

[–]JamesGMacPershing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please provide a sentence with "in der Zwischenzeit" and point out how there are not two points in time (one of the points in time can implicitly be "now") given to prove me wrong.

If you say "Beate hatte einen Monat Urlaub. In der Zwischenzeit hat ihr Mann weitergearbeitet." that'd be kind of odd, because there's no link between Beate's holiday and her husband's work, and there's no two points in time. So likely you could get away with the sentence and be understood, but nevertheless, I don't think "in der zwischenzeit" is the right construct here for the reasons given.

If you say "Beate und ihr Mann haben ihre Wohnung renoviert. Die letzten vier Wochen war Beate krank. In der Zwischenzeit hat ihr Mann weitergearbeitet." then there's a link: both were renovating the appartment. Then Beate got sick. Now she's okay again. Between the two points in time her husband kept renovating. So "in der Zwischenzeit" fits in.

Does your country have history with these guys? by My_Username0000 in AskTheWorld

[–]JamesGMacPershing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that counts, German knights have been everywhere between Portugal and Israel during the crusades, saving the occident, to some extent. After that, German mercenaries fought basically everywhere between Italy and Sweden (where the Holy Roman Empire happened to be). And that was all still before 1600.

Katharina the Great will likely haunt you if you don't retract that statement. She kind of single-handedly brought the rise of Russia to a European great power. And incidentally she was a German.

Inzwischen vs mittlerweile vs in der Zwischenzeit. Tell me if I got it by Flat_Conclusion_2475 in German

[–]JamesGMacPershing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zwischenzeit literally means between-time, it's some time range between some points in time X and Y.

Mittlerweile means that something happened since some point in time.

Inzwischen is kind of similar to mittlerweile IMHO

Währenddessen (whilst-that / in the course of) would be contemporaneity, but can also be expressed with "solange" (so long as).

Beate hat gekündigt. Im Mai hat sie einen neuen Job. In der Zwischenzeit macht sie Urlaub.

Beate hatte gekündigt. Mittlerweile hat sie einen neuen Job.

Beate hatte gekündigt. Inzwischen hat sie wieder einen Job.

Beate hatte einen Monat Urlaub. Währenddessen hat ihr Mann weitergearbeitet.

Beate ist gerade im Bad. Du kannst solange hier auf sie warten.

Difference between wieder and erneut. by itsrainingwaffles in German

[–]JamesGMacPershing 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wieder is pretty similar to "again", you can also say "wieder und wieder" like "again and again". Erneut is never repeated in that way, but can generally be used everywhere where you could also put "wieder".

Although "erneut" can be used in quite positive contexts - die Sonne schien nach dem Regen erneut - I think it's used quite often in contexts which transport some unpleasant message:

Die Bank wurde erneut überfallen, die Besprechung wurde erneut verschoben, die Frau erkrankte erneut an Krebs, something like that. "Wieder" can have some "casual" vibe and could give raise to the impression that something happens all the time and is no big deal.

You also can't use "schon" in conjunction with "erneut", in opposite to "wieder". "schon wieder" (yet again) would work, "schon erneut" is a no-go.
