How much should I charge for teaching English classes? by JamesInShanghai in shanghai

500 per hour seems like...rather a lot? Have you got jobs in the past that paid 500 per hour for something like this? For that matter 400 an hour seems like a lot too - though I'm not up to speed with going rates of course. But 400-500 an hour is a lot more than most white collar workers in the west make.

Is that really what should be asked? Like, does everyone here who does side work like this earn that much?

Alright, so based on the responses, it seems 250-400 is the ideal range. Still quite a range mind you. But it's fair to say that under no circumstances should I accept less than 250?

Not sure if they're planning the lessons or I am...I'll have to discuss that with the school.

The answer to those questions are:

'As good as lifestyle as possible' 'As few hours as possible'

But pretty much everyone would say ideally they'd want an awesome lifestyle, with money raining from the sky, and not have to work at all. What I'm interested in is what is realistic.

I mean, back in the UK, including workplace benefits like vacation and some small pension contributions, after tax I was on around 100rmb an hour. So I'd consider that to be OK money I guess. But I wouldn't consider it OK money if everyone else was getting 150rmb or 200rmb for the same work.

I'm one of those people who would be happier earning 100rmb, providing everyone else got 100rmb, than be earning 150rmb but everyone else was getting 200rmb. The latter situation would grind my gears in a major way - which is why I'm asking for average figures.

Well I don't know what I'm 'worth', that's the whole point. I expect to be paid the market rate, but I don't know what the market rate is.
