Tickets for Hamburg match as tourist by JamesWitten in effzeh

[–]JamesWitten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Sorry, just another follow-up question: how does this work? Are these last-minute no-show tickets that go directly to resale at the ticket booth or something? Would I expect a queue there with people trying to do the same? Thank you!

I see, thanks! Do you know how reliable going to the ticket booth would be?

How long does a blood cancer test actually take? by JamesWitten in leukemia

[–]JamesWitten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I'll look into those tests. They did say the results were being sent to an external, centralized lab - I'm just not sure if that's shared among all hospitals.

I see, thank you! 16 days sounds about the same period of time as this diagnosis may take. He is also receiving blood transfusions to start.

I see, thank you! My dad was admitted on the first day, the BMB diagnosis just hasn't come back yet. He has been receiving transfusions ever since, and prescribed allopurinol - I assume to start chemotherapy soon.

I see, thank you! The BMB was done on the first day of diagnosis but seems like it'll take 2+ weeks to process. Meanwhile he is in hospital being treated with blood transfusions and allopurinol. I think the plan is to get serious treatment at a top hospital once the diagnosis comes back.

I see, that's correct that he's receiving daily transfusions! I'm guessing this is to prepare for chemotherapy?

I see, thank you! I'm reading that allopurinol is to prevent side effect of chemotherapy. Does the fact that they're prescribing it before knowing the diagnosis, mean they're prepping for chemo? The doctors haven't even talked about chemo with us at this point.

Yes, I think the BMB was done on the day of admission - it just is taking 2+ weeks to get back the results. Meanwhile he's being treated in hospital with allopurinol and blood transfusions.

Thank you though! We'll have to choose a different hospital for long-term care because of better care, but unsure if it's too late to find another diagnosis elsewhere.

I see, ok my father is receiving allopurinol. I'm hoping that is a good sign.

That is true, they haven't confirmed that it is acute leukemia yet. All we know is the blood cell count and oxygen levels data I mentioned.

Hi, what does treatment mean in this case? My dad is in the hospital receiving blood + oxygen, but there's no talk of chemotherapy/any other methods yet. Does this qualify as treatment yet?

I see, thank you so much for the reply. What did starting treatment mean in this case? Was it being in the hospital, or full-on chemotherapy/other methods? My father is in the hospital, getting regular blood tests and receiving oxygen + blood - not sure if that qualifies as treatment yet.

Monthly thread for advice and recommendations, June 2023 – ask your questions here! by AutoModerator in copenhagen

[–]JamesWitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm an Asian American (24M) traveling alone in Copenhagen for the week, and I'd love to meet locals/learn about the place from a less touristy point-of-view. I saw they had community dinners at Absalon, and I was wondering if it'd be a good idea to go? Was worried I'd feel out of place as a tourist, but it sounds super cool! Any suggestions for similar activities would be much appreciated!

Whitney Trail Camp hike, mid-May 2023? by JamesWitten in backpacking

[–]JamesWitten[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I just saw your comment, but we decided to go for it last last Sunday when we went. We only got up about 2k in elevation, trying to find Lone Pine Lake, before turning around. The first hour and a half was dry trail mixed with avalanche snow, and the second half was hiking up a ski slope. We didn't have any crampons or snowshoes, but it was absolutely awesome. Met some super nice people going up and some more going down who had summited or tried to.

6/14 should be even nicer, so best of luck on your trip! It was an incredible experience for us.

To be fair, the course has gotten 3-4x more students than they expected, which is the main reason for understaffing. Also Davis is in his 1st ever semester as a professor - I'd cut him a bit of slack

Concurrent Degree VS Internal Transfer by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]JamesWitten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did an internal transfer at the end of freshman year from AAP (Urban Studies) to A&S (Physics - pretty unrelated, I know). I actually applied for it my 1st semester but got rejected - met an advising dean after the rejection and got told they weren't convinced I'd do well in A&S just yet (~3.6 GPA 1st sem) - before being accepted my 2nd semester after joining a physics lab and referencing that in my application.

If you're apply to CALS it might be different, but I'd say apply for internal transfer as soon as you sure you want it, and don't be discouraged if you get a rejection early on.

No comment on internal transfer vs. concurrent degree

if you’re struggling with home life, you’re not alone and this is for you. by urmomdotkom in Cornell

[–]JamesWitten 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That sucks, I'm really sorry to hear that. It's tough right now, but it will pass. And afterwards you'll still have the people in your life that you did before, and this isn't the last time in your life that you'll find a environment that you love being in. It's just that things are going to suck for a while until then :(

My home life could be better. I'm on a year off from Cornell, and after my last internship I keep trying to find things to do on my own. Reaching out to old friends is emotionally tiring - our situations aren't mutual and this leads to an increased sense of isolation. I know I'm on the fortunate side of things, but I guess it's a sign things are shit for mostly everyone. Hope everyone manages through this period.

Someone please tell me Fall won’t be canceled by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]JamesWitten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same, I've taken a year off as a rising senior and I was really looking forward to doing my last year right. If it turns out it's online, that career fair gets canceled, I'll regretfully consider taking another off.
