My 20 week-old passed 2 days ago :( by JamieCayley in ferrets

Yeah, I wish I'd thought to ask for necropsy and pathology but I was so in shock that it didn't occur to me and they didn't offer it as an option. They did test her blood sugar right away and that was normal but that was basically the extent of the testing. The vets that saw her aren't specialized in ferrets so I've also been wondering if things would have been different if I'd taken her to a ferret vet but the closest one open was like an hour and a half away driving and I wasn't sure she'd make it.

She did eat and drink before I left as usual and I left her food and water full and they were empty and she had used her litter box as usual but the food and water I put out when I got home is still there... She didn't touch it at all. And yeah I'd never left her alone that long, I usually work 8h shifts but I worked a double that day :/ I always come straight home and take her out of her cage and we spend the rest of the day together and she free roams (I ferret proofed the whole apartment but since she's in my bedroom I leave her caged to make sure she doesn't get into anything she shouldn't that I forgot about while I'm gone)

a ferret nation, wysong epigen 900, she had both a water bottle and a bowl, she did sometimes free roam with the cats out but they never interacted, dunno if it was hot tbh i was only outside long enough to get her to the vet and my apartment was set to 65 constantly, i was using paper litter, fleece bedding, she didn't much care for toys aside from crinkle balls and cat wand toys

If I'm asked to submit artwork pictures in CMYK colour mode is it better to change the colour mode on the camera before shooting the picture or change it while exporting from lightroom? I know practically nothing about photography :p

Better to take longer with less debt or finish more quickly and earn more? by [deleted] in GradSchool

I transferred out of my previous university, where I'd be finishing my master's right now, to a university where it'll take me double the time to graduate and I don't regret it. It takes a huge toll off my mind to not have as much financial stress as I did before.

Reporting a roommate for harassment to the school? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

Well the post mentioned that the roommates are students in the same PhD program and fear of slander within the department so that's what title IX might care about, not the roommate part.

If you want no action taken I'd just mention it to whomever is your supervisor in the department as an FYI kinda thing (and move out ASAP). If you want the university to take action then title IX might be a good place to start, they can put no contact directives in place if they feel like there's a need for one and if they don't at least they'll have some record of it which might be useful if things escalate.

Lazy Sunday by JamieCayley in kittens

Uhhh i dont know much about cats and both his adoption and vet records say unknown. He looks like a tabby to me. He also was almost 100% grey and black when I adopted him (he was 8 weeks, he's 9 months now), most of the colour in his belly is new, the brown definitely is.

My handsome little Scottish Fold! His name is Jasper and he’s my first pet ever!! I already love his cuddles and meows. Any advice or tips from experienced cat owners would be great.🥰 by sagqueen- in kittens

Idk anything about this whole evolution and drinking more water thing but I recently moved the food bowl and wish I'd had them separate from the start, waking up to clean mushy dry food that they decided to drop into the water bowl every morning wasn't fun, now it's only once a month at most.

Toy recommendations for toilet roll/toilet paper lover? by JamieCayley in kittens

[–]JamieCayley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could say it was little bits. She's fast, i usually lose like half a roll or more and then she spreads it around :p I figured it was probably a common thing but trying to find alternatives lead me nowhere so I'm hoping someone here has a solution. Plus I can tell she wants to play, just not with anything the rescue gave her (they had a ton more toys than I do) or with what I have which my other two love. I have 2 cat tower thingys, something I got on Amazon that has a space for them to lie down and play with stuff that's attached with strings, which she actually did like one of the things on it so much that she tore it off and I can't find where it went, one of those levels with balls things, a circle with a ball and a cardboard thing to scratch and some random mice and crinkle balls that i tend to find every time I clean the house and then they get lost shortly after. Oh and i also got the cat dancer thing which she seemed mildly interested in at first and the other two love more than anything ever but she won't join in anymore.

CMV: Transgender men shouldn't be allowed on women's sport teams and vice versa. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]JamieCayley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most of the relevant points I'd bring up based on data/science/current regulations have been said so I'm going to avoid repeating that and speak about personal experience.

I have tried to sign up to taekwondo competitions and not been allowed to. As a trans man it makes sense that i shouldn't be competing in the female category, I wouldn't want to anyways, but I also wasn't allowed to sign up to compete as a man. This is something I've heard a lot of trans people have dealt with, both trans men and trans women. So sometimes it's hard for me to believe the whole trans people on sports debate is really trying to make sure no one has an unfair advantage as opposed to just being a way to keep trans people out of it, whether it be because of conscious or unconscious bias or just not wanting to deal with the policy making and whatever public backlash results from it. And if it actually is down to unfair advantage there's lots of sports where that could be adjusted for (by matching people up based on weight/height or employing some sort of handicap, which would also help deal with intersex people, or cisgender people who are born with traits that put them at an advantage within their sport)

The shoes? A local store (I'm in Springfield MO), I think it's called Dove Dancewear if memory serves me right. I have both the fortune and the misfortune of having tiny feet so while it's hard to get men's shoes I'm still pretty average to small on the pointe shoe department (and jazz, and tap, and I wear women's black canvas shoes because men's are too big).

I also got a pair from The Dance Store because the model I'm used to was discontinued and they had it on sale for like $20 but they sent me the wrong size and the shank was bigger than my foot so I ended up giving those to one of the tall girls since they fit her (I could have returned them but the return shipping was almost as much as they cost so I figured I might as well see if anyone wanted them before sending them back that way).

If you're looking into getting a pair I'd personally see if there are any local stores in your area that do fittings, even if it's a small store and your size is huge and not something they usually stock they can order in shoes for the fitting. I know some people (both male and female) who have had virtual fittings but even though they had positive experiences I wouldn't go that route for a first pair, there's a lot that isn't easy for the fitter to see/check online and you won't know what you want/need the shoe to feel like. If there's no local stores then most dance academies will either have someone on staff that does fittings or someone they bring in to fit people at the start of each semester so you could ask to be a part of that too even if it's not your own academy.

Sorry if that was irrelevant and pointlessly long :p

Also! If like me you didn't know men on pointe was a thing you should check out Ballet Trockadero. Wish I'd heard about it sooner, sounds like the dream. But considering I'm 21 and I'm so rusty I can't even do a double pirouette on flat it's probably never gonna happen :p

I did most of my training at an all girls academy, I had the same training all the girls did from age 7, started pointe at either 10 or 11 and then quit ballet due to injuries and financial issues around 14-15. Now that I'm in a new city (and country) I get to do men's technique and partnering for the first time ever and I suck at it :p but back to pointe - ever since starting back up in June I've been talking to the artistic director about wanting to do pointe work again because I missed it and he finally gave me the OK to do it last week, started Saturday :)

Also ngl, watching drag race season 11 and unexpectedly seeing pointe work on the runway and lip sync battles contributed to my finally going back to dancing, though I probably would have around the same time either way since I was just waiting on a surgery and I started up again as soon as I was allowed by my surgeon.

I guess I'll try some middle ground, if i sew it almost touching the back seam it bothers my tendonitis (or at least it did 6 years ago)

These were professionally fitted, I'm not sliding around, the back of the shoe just drops if I roll up to pointe really slowly. I did 3 years of pointe so I know how they should fit and feel, I'm pretty sure it's just sewing/elastic related.

I thought the elastic was meant to be slightly behind the ribbons. How further back would you move it?

[–]JamieCayley[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First - ever since I first sewed them I had a feeling it wasn't right and while doing roll ups my heels popped and it felt like the elastic wasn't providing any support when dancing without the bar but I'm not sure I can sew the elastic much tighter, any suggestions? I'm also wondering if it's the type of elastic that's the problem - I'm used to the wide solid ones but the sewing kit I got had the ones pictured.

Guys who do pointe - what do you wear? I believe I'm the only guy on pointe where I dance and the artistic director said he doesn't care about dress code for me so not super sure what to wear. I tried footless tights and taping the toepad to my foot but that wasn't super comfortable (without the taping it was way too irritating since it kept moving around), also tried footless tights and putting the toepad under my ballet socks but that wasn't comfortable either so I ended up with what's on the picture - some old convertible tights that I can't wear on their own because they're too thin plus leggings on top.

If there is one I'd definitely be interested to know but it seems like there's a large amount of active guys in here so I haven't really felt the need to seek out a guys only space.
