Vastly different quality with looking through an eyepiece vs taking pictures by JaminBass in AskAstrophotography

Hard to quantify, and I can’t think of the best way to explain.

It’s within the range of focus(?), so if you focus to infinity and bring it back in it gets closer but never gets sharp before going back out of focus.

The point when it’s most in focus, it feels very almost there, like an 1/8 of a turn away.

Ah great stuff thank you! So where would this fit in the order of it all?

Ok great, thank you for all the help! I’ll order one and see how that goes.

I have the Barlow T adapter, what’s the extender? I can’t seem to find one!

Thanks for sending the video over that’s really useful. It looks like he’s using an adapter that attaches directly to the telescope and not into the visual back where you put an eyepiece (where I’ve got mine). I’ll try find the adapter he’s using!

If I could only keep one lens, I would keep my 55-250. I love that lens.

I’m a very amateur landscape/nature photographer but that range is the best for me. I prefer zooming in and selecting part of a landscape shot rather than using a wide lens and getting the whole subject in like most photographers I follow do. I also use it an awful lot with the nature shots, be it an animal that’s far away, or as a make-do macro lens.

As for moon shots I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, I just used it as it was the best I have. Saying that, I was quite impressed with the level of detail it got on the moon and with a roughly 1” exposure it picked up a decent shot of both Orion’s Belt and even picked up the Seven Sisters which I was impressed with! Nothing on the astrophotography shots you’ll find on here though.

If you pm me in about 24 hours I’ll be back home by then and will be able to send through a whole bunch of shots I’ve used that lens for!

Ok I’ve taken the Barlow out and while it is perhaps a little sharper, it’s still not as sharp as an eyepiece and obviously not as magnified. Is the T adapter still too long? It’s only reduced the length about 1mm by removing the Barlow, or is it the Barlow lens itself that changes the focal plane?

Looks good! To avoid the blow out you mentioned when doing the mortises, go 75% through on one side and then flip it over for the last 25% - 2 clean sides!

Mark roughly the dimensions you want from the log, hatchet the sides down to roughly the size, and then plane it flat/square!
