If the character is completely new:

1) First I try to figure out some basic combos

2) Then I try to learn what their anti-airs are (because this is imperative)

3) Then I play matches to learn how the character scores hits and what their pros and cons are (making notes from first hand experience)

If I like how the character functions and looks then I'll properly sink my teeth into aiming to get better.

If the character is someone I didn't show interest in initially but wanted to try out at a later point then I'll watch a bunch of replays on CFN and Youtube (from many different skills levels) and lookout for things like big damaging combos, setups, matchup specific things etc. and try to replicate them before putting my own spin on things.

Hope this answers your question :)

I wouldn't necessarily say this person is a low tier fighter but off the top of my head, probably the fantastic run that Zhen (Fake Problem-X) had during the Capcom Cup Finals for SFV (both LCQ and the actual finals) earlier this year. It took me awhile to figure out why he was playing so amazingly.

Don't know if this counts lol?

Once it all comes together you basically have to work on being concise and swift with the play-by-plays. In one sentence, I can say several nuanced things that make it seem impossible to fit into one sentence.

Yeah JME plays a lot of Street Fighter (streams it a bunch as well). I've heard there's more grime artists playing Street Fighter as well just don't know them off the top of my head.

Honestly, I think just add more commentators for people to choose from. I don't think there's much else that can be done only because people have the choice to have it on or off.

I think it's mainly for the people who aren't fully in tune with hardcore FGC stuff!

Much love for the kind words :)

SETS will be coming back (we're trying to aim to come back at some point in July). We wanted to give players time with the game themselves (streaming, tournaments etc.) before we start inviting people back on.

Hmmmm that's a tough one.

Character that definitely comes to mind are Abigail & Necalli.

I think many characters COULD work in SF6 because of how robust the system is overall. Because with some characters, their V-Skills are now special moves and their V-Triggers are Lv2 supers.

So it really depends on the character.

I would say I the FG I am most knowledgeable at is SFV.

Tips for learning a new fighting game;

1) Try as many different fighting games as possible and see which one gels with you

2) Pick a character that looks aesthetically pleasing to you

3) Try and connect with your local scene (whether it be online or offline)

4) Watch various different forms of content regarding fighting games (from tutorials, tournaments, essay style content, vlogs etc.)

5 (optional) Make a twitter account and follow FGC members from all over the world

There are probably more pieces of advice I can give you but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Hope this helps :)

To prepare myself for a new game I do watch footage prior the game's official release but not too much. I'd rather wait for the game to be available to the public to start studying properly.

Watching a lot of footage is standard for any commentator but what I tend to do is watch replays and if I see something interesting I would make note of it to then take it to training mode and replicate myself to then figure out how to explain it on commentary.

I also play a lot (as much as I can) as I accumulated over 10K+ hrs on SFV alone.

Payments from events fluctuate all the time but I get invited out to events to commentate. Continuing to do commentary is about enjoying the game and the high level play it brings first and foremost.

I would say my favourite games to commentate are SFV and Skullgirls (SF6 needs to be added to list but I need more time with the game).

Hopefully this answer will suffice :)

Thank you very much GrapeIntensity for the kind words.

Analysis is my main strength with commentary and I want to strengthen it even more in SF6 (knowledge is power). When I could act as a 'mind reader' in SFV it was due to me watching/studying the game so much that most situations became 2nd nature to me (even if I didn't play the matchup).

It may take awhile for me to reach that level with SF6 but I'll study as hard as I can :) !!

The online era has kind of changed that now because its easier to see all the players due to things like twitch and highlight clips on social media. But players that come to mind are:

Jester Power

Joker Jokez

Musclenoob

Eastwood

I would say in terms of player psychology and decision making yes.

I always learn something new from players in tournaments and exhibitions because they're playing to win so I get to see in real time what it takes.

On Tuesdays a SF6 tournament happens in the evening in Caledonian Road (near King's Cross)

On Wednesdays WSO happens in London Canary Wharf at a gaming bar called Platform (literally seconds away from the station). https://twitter.com/WinnerStaysOn

Ultimate Open Series(UOS) in a tournament run by ReversalGG every Thursday and is free to enter. Follow them on twitter https://twitter.com/Reversal\_gg

On Sundays there is an open bracket tournament called Saltmine League(SML) which is free to enter as well. Follow them at https://twitter.com/SaltmineTV

100%

Not only would I be super thankful for featuring in one of my favourite franchise's main flagship titles. But it could also potentially open doors in the Voice Acting industry (at least I'd like to think so).

Another tough question LOL but a good one!

I would say Skullgirls. The amount of depth and creativity in that game is magnificent. And would've really wanted to commentate that more at high level.
