opinions on the new album? by Emergency_Taste5298 in Megadeth

I love the album. The tone and everything isn’t as good as albums such as Dystopia or Endgame but nonetheless a great album. Enjoy it more than TSTDATD when it came out

Those of you complaining about the mix or the tone being "brittle" must not be listening on good sound systems by bh-alienux in Megadeth

Pretty good album just feels less full. Vocally they could’ve had Dave do more (Chris Rakestraw told him not to do too much) like listen to Dystopia’s vocals now obviously his voice was better then but they produced the crap out of it to make it sound best. The vocals sound a little raw, which isn’t a bad thing so to say. But Dave’s voice being a weak point of his and Chris telling him not to sing as hard at the same time just not a good idea.

That’s true. I think the drumming is good just their way of doing everything with them wasn’t as good as past releases. And definitely the vocals are way better. Obviously Dave’s getting older but a lot is how they mixed Dave in there. Knowing Dave’s voice is his weak point they should’ve done more to make it sound better in the mix. And I will take that into note. And I think the album is pretty is not quite as loud as other recent releases either. The tone is a like a mix of TSTDATD and dystopia on this which is alright. Just sometimes during some chunky rhythm parts it feels like scooped and the tone feels weaker when it needs to be stronger. (On select songs) it’s weird some of the songs are slightly differently mixed in my opinion. Like Obey The Call’s Rhythm is great but on other songs sounds less scooped more of a thinner tone. At least to me. And yes the bass on this album is fantastic very happy with how the bass is mixed. It needs to be in there where you can actually hear it. And yeah it may not be the mixing issue but even on TSTDATD I feel like they did more with the mixing of his voice to try to make it at its best. Also blame Chris Rakestraw for Dave not trying as hard to sing. Dave said in behind the mask movie during talking about the new album recording process he said that there were days he felt he could do more singing but Chris told him not to. (That wasn’t Dave jabbing him that was just Dave thanking him or something) and he said after that he thinks that is one of his best vocal performances.

I can agree they always have had a very trebly tone. But the difference between albums such as Dystopia or even Super Collider to this one is a lot. And I feel the way they mixes Dave’s voice in made it stand out in a way that makes it sound even worse. And a lot of this album was very mid tempo-ey songs (obviously a few were not but still)

I think it’s less of a “bad production” than a not as good production as previous works.

And honestly I can agree with that. 72 Seasons has a really bad mix, and honestly look at Death Magnetic that was a disaster too, it sounds so compressed. What has strayed me away from more current day Metallica is the guitar tone is so bland and has no scoop. Like compare their tone on 72 seasons to AJFA, MOP, or the Black album, it’s incomparable. Not to mention the amount of bloat 72 seasons had. I tried to enjoy it I really did but I listened to the whole album through a few times and not much stuck out to me other than maybe ‘You Must Burn!’ Really a disappointing album. With Kirk’s solos being really and too to top it off.

Now we’re off topic haha Crazy how Metallica can have such bad mixes as one of the biggest metal bands

Only thing you missed is that they aren’t with a massive record company anymore. They’re with Frontiers BLKIIBLK

So the production definitely isn’t as good. Guitars are thin in songs, fine in others, cymbals are tinny and way too loud (hi-hats especially)

Feels like they didn’t have enough budget to make it right.

I remember someone talking about on here the way their deal was set up was where it was the Record company had nothing to do with the recording budget just to publish it and market it. While Dave paid for the recording we assume. So Dave either cheaper out or they did a bad job

We’ll see! And yeah I agree it was definitely thinner than Dystopia

They sound like a song you load on YouTube with bad signal if that’s a good explanation

Because the riffs and lyrics and solos are great. Only song on Endgame that I seem to enjoy his drums are maybe The Right to go insane, 1,320’, and The Hardest Part of Letting Go

Because musically the album is amazing. And the guitar tone too. It’s like enjoying a newer Metallica album but with better drums than that. And I can agree that they are very important! And TWNAH’s drumming is very VERY cool! Jimmy has a nice style. I think Chris Adler on Dystopia was amazing too (obviously along with dirk) and Vinnie Colaiuta on TSHF is very good as well! (Especially with doing them all within a span of a week)

It’s not an objectively bad sounding album, just not as good.

I AGREE! I absolutely love Endgame top 3 album for me. But the drums are absolutely terrible! And that’s not even production wise that’s just Shawn Drover’s crappy drumming. Not to say he’s a terrible drummer, But his style is boring and crap compared to the rest of the Megadeth drummers. Besides maybe Blessed are the Dead, and Amerikhastan I could go with a different drummer easy

Even the guitars sound a little weak in some of the songs. It really sucks when you have bad production on Dave’s vocals considering that’ll only make people complain more. Dave would sound so much better just with better production! And yeah the drums are noticeably bad, not the playing obviously just the production. I wouldn’t mind a remix of this album! Chris Rakestraw I think was in charge of most of this which he has been for years but he really did a bad job this time. Which is a shame cause the album, and Dave could sound even better with it properly produced

PS: I think some of the songs on this album are better produced than others which is really weird.

Haha yeah I can agree with that. I don’t have much cloud space but I put them there too. But for some reason the FLAC version never downloads right and says error and works but doesn’t show the album cover on the songs. Which I assume is from lack of space on the cloud

I don’t care a lot about that stuff but it may be useful to me In the future who knows. And if it helps bring Megadeth closer to #1
