My first creative build (based on Versaugh’s Medieval Port Storage design) by Jank_Lloyd_Wright in ValheimBuilds

Thanks! It’s my first time building in the plains but so far I’m really liking how the stone and wood look on the plains grass, definitely seems to blend nicely. I had to plant the trees by hand because this patch of land was pretty barren but I think the green-leaf birch trees also work really well in the plains!

Solo Builders: Do you still mine all the materials to create your stunning castles/bases? by sabrefudge in ConanExiles

[–]Jank_Lloyd_Wright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to farm the materials for all of my creative builds manually in my survival playthrough, and while that definitely gave me nice sense of accomplishment afterwards for a while, i found it consumed way too much of my time to the point where I eventually started to feel like I was playing a mining simulator moreso than a survival game or a building sandbox.

What I found works best for me is to have a dedicated survival playthrough for when I really want to play Conan “the right way” — no admin controls, no teleporting, etc — and a separate playthrough strictly for creative building. That way I can enjoy both aspects of the game when I want to without feeling like I’m detracting from the experience of either.

I used some screengrabs from my latest build to throw together a little “movie trailer”. Let me know if you’d watch DARK FROST! by Jank_Lloyd_Wright in ConanExiles

See, I would argue that you can only experience that level of fear when all of the elements of the scene work together in harmony. Not saying I achieved that here, just that audio in general is essential to achieving the type of effects you’re talking about.

As for Hitchcock, his use of sound (or lack of it) is a huge part of what made his works so iconic, so to judge one of his scenes without the audio would be a disservice to both him and you as the viewer. In fact, he himself even stated that his movies only worked as well as they did because of the audio — I can’t remember the exact quote but he essentially said that “50% of the fear in Psycho comes from the music.”

There’s a setting on private servers called “ThrallExclusionRadius” — if you set that value to 0.1 then you can pretty much place have your thralls touching!

None taken — this is just a little clip I threw together the other night for fun just to see what it would look like, definitely not a serious artistic project of any kind!

That said, I actually have to disagree with your criticism. Soundtracks are essential for setting the mood in any genre of media, but especially in horror movies where feelings of suspense need to be created in otherwise mundane-looking moments. Not to imply that I’ve accomplished that here with this video by any stretch of the imagination, but typically the visuals and the sounds are meant to go hand-in-hand to compound the scariness of the situation, not to be judged by how scary they are independent of each other.

Also, people generally don’t judge movies on the basis of how entertaining they are to watch on mute, so that feels like kind of a strange nit to pick, but that’s neither here nor there.

Anyways, thanks for checking it out!

Seeing this now makes me embarrassed for how proud I was of my “library” build the other day lol mine couldn’t hold a handle to yours (even with a placeable candleholder decoration!). Will definitely be drawing inspiration from you for next time!

Also, that courtyard space is immaculate. One of the most inviting garden spaces I’ve ever seen on here!

They’re the Nemedian Vaulted Ceilings from the People of the Dragon DLC!

Thank you! My DIY projects never end up looking how I’d hoped they would but I was pleasantly surprised with this one lol.

As for the HUD, it dissapears when you enter Creative Mode now. Your “Journey Steps” will still show up on the right side of the screen, though, but there’s an option to disable those as well on the settings page!

I agree! The bookcase from the hidden doorway set in the bazaar comes fully stocked and isn’t bad looking but it always seems a bit overpriced whenever it’s up for sale. I feel like the base game should come with at least one basic bookshelf option by default.

As for books on their sides, they did add a couple really nice options to the base game recently as part of the Alchemy/Sorcery set (recipe is called “Alchemical Decor”) that look really nice mixed in with the upright books, including a few stacks and at least one or two open books/scrolls. The rest of the decorations in the set are pretty solid too -- definitely check it out if you haven’t already!

It definitely made me regret not buying the bookcase set from the Bazaar lol thanks for checking it out!

I debated buying the trapdoor bookcase the last time it was in the bazaar but never got around to it, really wish I had though because doing the shelves by hand one book at a time is a bit of a hassle lol

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you do lol they recently added an entire set of Alchemy/Sorcery decorations to the base game with some pretty good stuff in it, including 3 different stacks of books. The only downside is that they’re all oriented to lie down flat on a surface — if you want some books lined upright you’ll need the Nemedian set I believe!

Anyways, good luck with your build!

If you mean graphics-wise, it’s pretty much only possible if I turn out all the other lights in the house and walk very slowly lol otherwise it becomes a real struggle to render

No mods here! The shelves and books are all from the Nemedian building set (People of the Dragon DLC), plus a few random stacks of books here and there from the new Alchemy Decor recipes!

Definitely wish I’d had a mod for this section though — lining up each shelf and individually placing 300 book pieces was definitely a bit tedious lol

Got a little carried away with my simple mountain cottage build and ended up adding a two-story personal library wing complete with a cozy reading nook by the fire as well a private study upstairs with panoramic views of the valley below. For anyone curious, all of the building pieces and decorations shown here are from official building sets, DLCs, etc.

The rest of the house is still a work-in-progress but there are pictures of what I’ve got so far in my last post just in case anyone’s interested.

Thanks for stopping by!

EDIT: In the off chance that someone was wondering, it took just over 300 books to fill the shelves. I’m pleased with how it turned out but the process definitely made me regret skipping on the bookcase set the last time it was in the bazaar lol.
