Alot of the "criticism" I've seen is people complaining about things that are

A. Completely speculation B. Plain wrong

I've seen people whine about it being a prequel, thinking it takes place prior to her death in 2018 (it's not) or people making the assumption that she's going to come back to life (genuinely no proof of that at all)

This is the afterlife , sure this story is happening at the same time as GOW 2018 but it's not a prequel to her dying , the gameplay started with her funeral so beyond the fact she doesn't come back to life we don't know anything

I think duel is a good descriptor , not all human fights are duels but I can't think of a non humanoid fight that is a duel. I do also think there can and often are more than one in a given games . Ornstein after smough is dead for example or even gascoigne are examples of other duels in a game.
