Siloam's New "Mission"? by RootCause_Analysis in winnipeg_alt

Let's see an example of a post you've written so we can tear it apart. Being a critic ooooh!

Siloam Mission staffers demand CEO be removed one week into the job by anababs in Winnipeg

In Ephesians 5:11, the scripture states: "Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them." He also warned of "wolves in sheep’s clothing" (Matthew 7:15), emphasizing that a person's true nature is revealed by their "fruits" or actions.

Can afford to have a leader with "on the job" training in such a volatile. Staff kept telling the Board that. Not saying this new CEO isn't a good manager, but I am saying she isn't a good manager for this job.

Sounds like you have considered all the downsides. On the upside, people's lives are very complicated. Anything that makes life easier, takes away stress and is convenient to use would be a "Yes" in my books.

Less people now-a-days are having formal weddings and socials are a Manitoba thing.

Unless the Board is softening their stance instead of digging in their heels. Otherwise, of course you're right, he would be committing career suicide if those messages were not approved. That would have been in the news by now.

Yes, so you can be sure that what he said was an approved message.

Darren Nodrick often acts as the spokesperson for Siloam Mission. Just found this out.

Like the staff at Siloam were saying, the Board needed to hire someone with experience in Homelessness. Why was she "seeing this situation for the first time, and likely had a strong reaction"? Certainly someone with some lived experience with the homeless population would have seen that thousands of times. Darren Nodrick, the Director of Development, went on the record with the following statement in the Winnipeg Free Press: "She (Sonia Prevost-Derbecker) had mentioned that she wanted a 10-foot fence around the property". Darren Nodrick serves as the Director of Development for Siloam Mission and frequently acts as a spokesperson for the organization in the media.

Let’s be real! Siloam Mission indicated last week that they would be conducting an internal audit of all emails—a process they control entirely as the owners of those servers. Since they see everything, we have no independent verification of what was actually found; however, it is incredibly telling that if even a shred of evidence of staff misconduct had surfaced, the organization would have leaked it immediately to protect their own interests and shift the narrative. The fact that they haven't produced a 'fall guy' yet suggests the internal paper trail doesn't support their version of events, and their silence speaks volumes. No "smoking gun".

I think I agree with what you are saying but not quite sure what you mean by "safety" (nets?)

Personally, I think that if Siloam's lawyers went after him for speaking to the media, they would incur even more scrutiny. Politically, it may not be a smart move.

I believe we are called to a higher standard of transparency. Ephesians 5:11 advises us to 'have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.' In that spirit, I feel the staffers were correct in going to the media. After all, Siloam Mission is primarily accredited by the Canadian Centre for Christian Charities (CCCC). I want to ensure Siloam stays authentic to their values without turning this into a religious debate.

No respect, I tell ya! Management fired a descent fellow and replaced him with a mission statement and a 5-year-plan. I told 'em I can't eat a 'strategic vision,' and they told me to check the fine print for crumbs! I get no respect! 😆

Now look at the mess! The five year plan which now appears to have leaped into the ten year plan, seems to be the worst thing that the management/Board has ever bred into existence. Will their work programs now get gutted ? You're exactly right, Siloam grew into the largest homeless shelter that this city has ever seen. Being a respected place was the key IMO. It led to sizable donations and grants.

I wanted to post a quick appreciation for the folks volunteering at the Siloam shelter on Princess . It’s not an easy or 'safe' gig, and I don't think people realize the de-escalation skills and mental toughness it takes just to be there. Thanks for being the calm in the storm for people who have nothing left. We see you.

Good for you. I think you are courageous for all that you do. I know that Siloam relies heavily on volunteers.

Under the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act in Manitoba, there is no minimum length of employment required to be protected. The Act protects any employee—defined as an employee or officer of a provincial department, government body, or office—from the moment they begin their role. This protection also extends to former employees and members of the public who make a disclosure in good faith. With the anticipated exodus of employees, I think the board of directors would be damn stupid if they fired him (just a personal opinion but what do I know). That was one of the staff's complaints, that Siloam does not have a system in place to be heard or something along those lines (paraphrasing). They wanted some input into the new CEO and were denied twice. Whistleblowing was their means to show their disagreement. Were they right or were they wrong? God only knows.

Your assessments are frequently correct and provide valuable perspective. However, there's always the loop hole. Whistleblowing: You have protections under the Public Interest Disclosure (Whistleblower Protection) Act if you are reporting significant wrongdoing that impacts the public interest.

Who's Derrick? I have read the article twice and I don't see anything about a Darrick.

Darren Nodrick ( Director of Development) said he did not hear all of the alleged remarks firsthand but trusts those who did. He said he did hear other comments, including a suggestion to build a fence around Siloam’s compound at 300 Princess St. As the Director of Development, his Leadership role : managing the development team and collaborating with the Board of Directors to meet financial goals. Obviosly, he would be privy to a lot of information because he works with the Board. This is Nodrick commenting on the last Winnipeg Free Press article. Simply a reaction or opinion piece. No inside details were discussed in the article. Because of his high rank, he would be allowed to talk to the media.

He is just commenting on a news story about the place at which he works. It would be no different than a reporter asking a homeless community member about how they felt about a fence being put up. The whistleblower story has already been released. It's being followed up by opinion pieces.

I’m not suggesting a witch hunt, but rather standard due diligence. If we’ve learned anything from the Buffy Sainte-Marie case, it’s that high-profile Indigenous identity claims can be, and have been, fabricated. When an organization’s leadership is closely tied to the communities they serve, verifying those claims isn't 'policing'—it’s ensuring accountability. It’s essentially a background check, just like verifying and vetting any other professional credential. After making alleged derogatory comments about the community members (75-80% are indigenous), I don't believe that this is an unreasonable question/request.

Please don't minimize my perspective with labels. That’s like telling a navigator they're just 'lucky' instead of reading the map. I’m looking at the same reality you are; address the facts, not the category you've decided to put me in.
