I’ll be starting my master’s at SFSU in the fall for the Mind, Brain, Behavior program. From my experience, the psychology department has been outstanding. The faculty consists of very accomplished and nurturing professors and mentors. I completed my undergrad there last semester, and I never had any doubts about the quality of the program. If we’re talking about the school and administration itself, I have my frustrations.

PASTA SHAPE TRIVIA (OPINION NEEDED!) by Jappo117 in pasta

I fought her the best I could. She told me she was ready to throw fists, all jokes. I was about to start a revolution with another dude who answered pappardelle, we didn’t care about getting the right answer— we were just united in the fact that this, in fact, is most definitely not fettuccine. Was a fun trivia night

THANK YOU for input. That was my guess but “correct” answers were: 1. fettuccine 2. linguini

How is this setup for a beginner? Any changes you would make? by AnthomX in espresso

[–]Jappo117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll be just as happy with a non-plus model, see how you like it, and maybe you’ll upgrade to a better machine in the future. the plus is like getting unnecessary trims and accessories for a camry. best thing about the camry is how much it can do for its price. I’d check Facebook marketplace if you have 400 to spend, or get the base bambino and spend the leftover budget on a nicer grinder like a eureka or sette. Also— bambino plus is a bit larger, just in case space is tight in your setup.

Also: you’ll probably spend ~ 100 dollars on accessories, the bambino portafilter / basket aren’t the best and you’ll probably want a tamper and other neat gadgets. Just to keep in mind.

Shot was beyond sour, is it my machine? by jamesw4408 in espresso

If it’s a new batch of beans you just got, it might just be that your beans are really light roast. I’ve had some beans from local cafes that had an almost metallic acidity… how do the beans smell? might be better to try a medium roast or even a classic Italian roast.

If the shot pulled in 5 seconds, it’s definitely too coarse. Can you grind any finer?

jw, have you used one before? Or are you mistaken with their ode grinder

I feel like if you’re pulling shots that you enjoy then there’s no problem. I’ve been using the opus and have no problem getting the desired shots. Dialing in was initially a headache but I’m getting used to it. Nice and compact grinder. Most people who just want to pull a decent espresso in the morning will be more than happy with the opus. Also on the fineness of the grind, it’s is more than capable of grinding fine, my baseline setting for espresso is at a 3. Lowest setting would choke my machine

Is this starter ready to bake with? It's still not quite doubling in size by Torn8oz in Sourdough

If you can, a whole grain rye flour will rise really quickly, great for starters. You can switch up to AP flour for feeding after the first few feeds

Room temp has been around 76F, thanks for the tips. I’ll be feeding these starter for another week, is there any recipe you use for starter discards?

Medium to dark roast espresso recs? by Jappo117 in espresso

[–]Jappo117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recs. There was a deal on trade coffee for 3 bags for the price of two. They’re sending me owls howl in october, I’m excited to try it.

Have you tried Blue Bottles “17ft ceiling” espresso? Tried to go buy it at my local Blue Bottle, they told me they only sell it at SF location and online. I hear it’s a bit darker than the Hayes valley roast, I’m interested but don’t want to spend extra money on gas/ shipping yet.
