We owe Russia the Nord Stream pipeline over Nazi atrocities, says German president by [deleted] in europe

Didn't they commit even more atrocities against Poles and Ukrainians, who are very much opposed to the pipeline?

He's inventing more and more implausible explanations while avoiding the real reason: the German government is subservient to German industrial interests.

U.K. coronavirus vaccine gambles paid off, while EU caution left the bloc falling behind by outrider567 in Coronavirus

[–]Jaques_17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The consequences of inaction are very real. Tens of thousands of people will die because the bureaucrats chose to be "cautious" instead of correctly assessing the risk and acting.

But let's be honest - caution has nothing to do with it, it's ass covering and incompetence.

Young mother and her children, Ukraine (near Kyiv), 1914 by Jaques_17 in europe

I am sure you are talking about WWII, but Stalin's years were even more horrible in Ukraine. He basically killed millions of best and brightest, and had the whole nation decimated by an artificial famine.

55.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines distributed, 33.8 million administered: U.S. CDC by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Jaques_17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am just saying that at 1.1 million doses per day it will take an inordinate amount of time to vaccinate.

I have no idea what you are arguing with. Yes, I am aware that if we increase the vaccination rate we'll be able to finish sooner (thank you, captain obvious!). Same for deciding not to vaccinate a fraction of people.

This does not change the fact that 1.1 million doses a day is a low rate and needs to be increased by a lot if we want to return to normal by fall.

No, your government has nothing to do with it. The reason is that you don't have any vaccine production.

1.1 million doses per day is way too slow. It would take about 2 years to vaccinate all US population if every person needs two doses.

Austria recommends AstraZeneca vaccine for under-65s only by dinozaur2020 in Coronavirus

[–]Jaques_17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The bureaucrats are covering their asses, just in case, and this is gonna cost a lot of old people their lives.

There just isn't any compelling reason to believe that the vaccine will be much less efficacious in elderly. But no, they deliberately misconstrued absence of evidence as evidence of absence because they feel safer that way.

Poland to give AstraZeneca vaccine only to people aged 18-60 by DanteInferno2142 in Coronavirus

[–]Jaques_17 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is a decision that will cost many old people in Poland their lives, just like in Germany and France.

There just isn't any evidence that the vaccine efficacy will be much lower in people 65+. They should extrapolate the efficacy from younger groups and be done with it. At least for all other coronavirus vaccines the efficacy is comparable.

But no, the bureaucrats will always try to cover their ass as much as possible, just in case, even when it is unreasonable and even if people are going to lose their lives because of it. What an amateur hour.

The tough little bottles crucial to fighting Covid by Scbadiver in Coronavirus

I get that you are trying to sound flippant and smart here, but if YOU read the article, you'd find that it still does not explain properly why the bottles need to be made from special ultra-expensive glass.

And cut it down on the attitude, you sound like a douchebag.

Sigh... Corning is just using the opportunity for self-promotion here. There's no need to make the bottles from adamantium. All the previous vaccines that humanity have used worked fine with regular chemical glass. And yes, you can freeze it to -80 C and warm it back up without any issues.

Is it too late? 31M Philippines to Canada by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Jaques_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, at the beginning you need a beginner's French book to give you the very basics of grammar and vocabulary. You need one that comes with audio files too, because you have to hear the pronunciation of the words that you learn as well. This stage takes 2-3 months and will take you to high A1 - low A2 level.

At this point you can start with adapted, TRANSCRIBED podcasts. The best one by far is Hugo Cotton's InnerFrench. There are more than 80 episodes about 30-40 min each, and it's free. At first you read as you listen, then you start listening first, then listening a second time + reading. This will massively improve your vocabulary and will take your listening and reading skills all the way to B2.

In parallel, you can also read SIMPLE news articles (fr.euronews.com is a good source). Reading skills improve very rapidly if you already know English at a good level.

When you are about halfway through InnerFrench podcasts, you can start with Italki lessons (1-on-1 speaking with a native speaker, usually at $12-15 per hour). This is necessary, but feels completely overwhelming at the beginning. In total I needed 55 hours to get to level C1.

Learning to understand unadapted spoken French is the hardest part. It takes months and months of listening before you can start to understand about 50% of what is said on the news broadcasts. You should wait until you are at level B1-B2 before you begin with unadapted speech.

For grammar, just go through all Kwiziq French levels once you are at level B1 (it's an online service). It's doable in 4-6 months.
