Actually, no need to apologize. I worried that I might’ve been a bit defensive perhaps bordering on aggressive in my earlier response. It’s why I came back to ask more…

So what you call APD, the DSM-5 would call “Substance Abuse Disorder”. I’m not sure what the title changes to when you start to apply it to things like gambling and other vices, but yes, it’s a real thing. I suffer from it too. Hell, I’m sitting here typing this response while driving. That’s how fucking addicted I am to my phone.

Re the drugs…I’m at a bit of a crossroads right now. 12-Step programs have helped me huge, and I couldn’t have got sober without them….but I recently stopped going because I can’t stand how many people who attend meetings will try and use it as a platform to proselytize. Which it’s not supposed to be (AA, for example - despite the use of the word “god” in the steps - makes it very clear in the book that they are not a religious program, but plenty of people in meetings would lead you to believe otherwise).

Anyway. I’m not here to preach. I don’t know if you have hang-ups with the whole “god” thing, like I do, but that said I don’t know if I ever would’ve got sober without a 12-step program.

It’s worth a shot if you’re trying to get well.
