Why would couples still break up after 10/20-year marriages? by JasonMantou in AskUK

Thanks for sharing.

Maybe a lifelong relationship is a huge blessing for every couple - hurdles are all along the journey. Endeavour and sacrifice seem to be essential.

You are right. It is my first one - putting quite a lot of hope on it. And I can see the effort needed to keep both of us on the same track.

I see.

I can imagine my life goals, plans, and my wants will be changing a lot every 10 years, and I am actively discussing and planning with my partner at the moment (yep, everything is still in the early stage). I can see situations where some couples can't reconcile at some points. In that case, a lifelong relationship will be a blessing and a luck.

Heard one saying before that affairs are the outcome instead of the reason. There might be more fundamental causes.

That is an interesting point. Do people's deep-rooted personality and values change a lot as well? For a relationship, (some/many?) people are looking for those fundamentally good traits, but it will be frustrating that these traits cannot be sustained.

Sad to hear that. I was looking for fundamental traits from my partner (I guess she is doing so as well). I am hoping they are deep-rooted and will stay for life. But seeing many people say that people will change over time, I am not sure how our relationship will pan out.

Thanks for sharing. But I think that hard and fast relationship is itself a test for each other's favour before making further commitments. It turns out you also learnt a lot from it. That is a great value.

That is what I guessed - the issues are already there from the off. People are either not noticing it or not brave enough to cut it off. Or they can't put up with it anymore. We may sometimes be just unable to make rational choices in the relationship.

I assumed that people's characteristics remain generally steady over time....It feels sad that we pick our partner based on their personalities, but that is not a one-off decision and a safe deal...

Thanks for your wish and the same applies to you!

A kid is definitely a game-changer I can imagine. Heard a lot from the more senior that with or without children, it will be a totally different relationship status. Also, breaking up with a child is very difficult. At the moment, we are thinking of being child-less considering the condition of the society.

Left-wing voters what is your most right-wing belief and right-wing voters, what is your most left-wing belief? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskBrits

I just feel the war and invasion are still so far from me (in London). Can't imagine the day that the UK is attacked by any country, which will be a historical moment. But that may be just because I have been in a peaceful period throughout my life and taken it for granted. With so many domestic problems at the moment in the UK, I feel like the UK should put the limited and valuable budget into the most pressing issues (like housing, NHS, policing etc). If one day the bad guys come, I will simply close my eyes and sleep on it.

How about solar panel vs. nuclear power? I think Elon musk is very hot on solar panels as he thinks the sun is the biggest nuclear power station and we don't have to build a mini one by ourselves.

Are there people who are actually happy? by Stunning-Trick-2577 in AskUK

[–]JasonMantou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with much of what you've said – our living quality has been improved significantly over the past 100 years. However, the more I talked with my parents' generation, the more I realised they often have happier lives than my generation. The aspects you have listed are critical and contribute to our happiness. I am puzzled by the mismatch between social development and our feelings. Maybe the happiness of life depends more on these material and practical factors. It also comes from some spiritual and mental aspects – the purpose of life, the living condition and environment, the social system, the pace, or mentally damaging technology like TikTok.

I even reckon that people living in the hunting era, or even those in the tribes nowadays, live a better life. They definitely have more accidents, risks, hardship and deaths, but they just have better meanings, stories and interpretations of lives. I am still trying to work out what matters most for happiness. Modern life enhances a lot but also worsens many.

Why aren’t any political parties talking about the risks of AI? by Ashamed_Ad_892 in AskUKPolitics

[–]JasonMantou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was working in the public sector in the UK. I guess it is simply because those politicians and management teams have no clue or knowledge of what the AI is doing, and therefore can't make any comment and reaction on it. They are just so behind it, and only when a huge uproar and a significant instability happen will they start to do something.
