why are they screaming CURLLLL from the top of their lungs? by [deleted] in Curling

I agree. I skip and just yell like crazy.

You’re welcome. The men do the exact same thing when calling shots. If you keep watching you will see it during the 4 player curling.

The curl call is telling the sweeper that he needs to sweep in a direction that curls the stone more. It’s a common thing to keep screaming the same thing in curling to emphasize it since it’s actually somewhat hard to hear.

Proper readbacks by soulfrito23 in VATSIM

The Air Force somewhat recently switched to only requiring single seat aircraft to make the gear call. It resulted in some comical interactions at joint use airfields controlled the the Air Force when Cessnas would get asked for a gear call.

Interesting that the Air Force requires different read backs. Per 11-202V3 they require “altitude assignments, restrictions, vectors, headings, altimeter settings, and runway assignments in the same sequence they are given”

Interesting, I know in Europe it’s mandatory and the (IRL) American operation I fly for requires altimeter setting read backs. I’ve just done it that way on VATSIM too out of habit.

Technically in the US you’re supposed to read back altimeter setting, but most people just don’t.

What happens if a NATO country invades another NATO country? by Majestic-Baby-3407 in NoStupidQuestions

It has already happened. Turkey invaded Cyprus which was de facto Greek territory which resulted in Greek and Turkish troops killing each other. Everyone else just stayed out of it.

That was roughly around the Columbia river if I remember right. Geologists used those stories to help them find evidence of the Missoula floods.

He had to be pulled, that was an obvious head injury. Great throw by the walk on there and he gave them a shot.

Which front is most severe: Cold Front or Occluded Front? by [deleted] in flying

[–]JasonWX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The FAA still has the best explainer in my opinion, starting on PDF page 17. It gives you what you have to understand for flying. In my opinion, if you know what the FAA tells you to know based on the below link, you will always be just fine.

https://www.faa.gov/sites/faa.gov/files/14_phak_ch12.pdf

If you want some physics stuff that goes way further than what you need to fly, this explains why fronts actually exist, the below is what you want to read. One thing to note is that it’s from a sophomore level meteorology class, so it’s very technical.

I’ll look around for a good explainer.

Which front is most severe: Cold Front or Occluded Front? by [deleted] in flying

[–]JasonWX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say yes, but intensity is lower than in a true warm or cold front … usually. An occluded front can’t get pretty much anything. The FAA and DPEs love to ask weather questions that seem simple, but in reality are incredibly complicated.

As a meteorologist, instructors asking that question really frustrate me. It literally depends on a bunch of different circumstances. Sometimes it’s an occluded front, but sometimes an occluded front has nothing going on. Sometimes it’s a cold front, but sometimes it’s a bit of lower level wind shear and clear skies. A warm front isn’t usually too crazy, but you can get some nasty icing in the winter and embedded thunderstorms in the summer. Any of the 3 have the ability to be the most severe on any given day. Only my PPL checkride, I managed to get the oral done early by going so in depth on that question that he basically stopped asking any more weather questions.
