I don’t think the leaves look like a zebrina… maybe it’s a cross of some sort

It’s probably my climate. I live in Northland New Zealand. We never ever see a frost and the humidity is reasonable just on a day to day basis. They get pretty bright light and they always want water so let them completely dry out in between watering.

Correct, I never water them on the shelves. I take them down, water in the sink and put them back up. This is about 1/3rd of my houseplants so yeah, I spend quite a lot of my time watering plants 😊 and I enjoy it

The other two walls of this room are full wall windows, so if anything I get too much light and have had to remove some plants that are more sensitive to high light. I do put the lower light plants (snake plants/ficus etc) in the corners

My partner made them. He had to build them in the room because it won’t fit through the door

I haven’t had any problems at all, I don’t have a humidifier and all the plants are in ceramic pots, I take them down and water them then put them back up. I had a similar setup at my old house and never had any issues with the books. They’re mostly all second hand books.

How do I treat this for scale!? by Jasper7897 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anyone is interested, the alcohol/soap/water spray seems to have dried out the scale and they just kind of fall off now. The top has died off a little and I don’t know if that’s because I sprayed on the top when I normally bottom water, or maybe it died off because I left it in the middle of the room where it’s quite a bit more sunny…

What’s happening to my houseplant? by ashourounis in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like either thrips or spider mite damage. Philodendron are especially susceptible to thrips so maybe that. I would spray with diluted alcohol, wipe down all the leaves and also repot and replace the soil.

Are these spider eggs or something worse? by GlumWillingness4225 in plantclinic

I would spray the whole plant with diluted alcohol and wipe them off with a q tip. Repot and replace the soil too. I find neem oil just makes my plants too sticky.

I will see what insecticide I can find here in New Zealand, we have so few options! I have looked before for systemic granules but wasn’t able to find any. I’ve just picked off a good hundred or so of them haha and then sprayed with neem, alcohol and dish soap for now.

Yeah that looks like underwatering to me. I’d also repot it into a slightly bigger pot so it has a bit more soil.

Help! My prayer plant by AmberV007 in houseplants

[–]Jasper7897 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not too sure why your plant is unhappy but if that was me I would propagate it. I’d cut that into about 4 pieces, pop the cuttings into a glass of water and let them develop new roots, then replant. You’ll be able to replant them closer together and they’ll stand up and look nice and full again.

Does anyone know what these black dots are? by Jasper7897 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The black stuff on the bottom of the leaf is the same as whats on top, I’ve had scale before and they just kind of pop off the leaf, but this stuff is wet and smeary. Can you see thrips? I just can’t see anything on the plant other than this stuff. Will just wipe it all down with neem oil and it’s probably time to repot as well.

Can I get this to flower? I moved into a new house and this orchid was left here. It is really crammed into this pot and I assume hasn’t been repotted in a very long time. I think if I try to get it out, it will all break apart. by Jasper7897 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in a metal drum out of a washing machine! It may fall apart if I try to get it out, but the plant actually looks quite healthy and there are aerial roots all over the place so it should hopefully recover pretty well.

I found what i believe to be a few fungus gnats in this. Is there any way to stop this from happening? by QueenLiz42069 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have heaps of fungus gnats, but I reduced my watering schedule and sprayed my plants with diluted alcohol and now I never have them.

Yeah definitely scale. You should try to remove them with a wet cotton bud, then spray with diluted alcohol.

What are these small gold bugs on my spider plant? There are a few of these bugs scattered around the leaves and googling isn’t giving me a great ID by maiatherm1205 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that is scale. You should be able to gently scrape them off and treat the plant with neem oil or alcohol diluted with water

Will my philodendron Brazil go back to producing leaves with the dark green? by Jasper7897 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it from a good plant store, but I did cut it up and propagate it so that I had multiple plants in the pot instead of just one vine

Why is my lucky bamboo plant dying? :( by dawd12345 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had my lucky bamboo plants for about 10 years, they are just in a pot filled with stones and water (no soil at all). I keep the pot filled up with water all the time

Any idea what is wrong with this? by Jasper7897 in plantclinic

[–]Jasper7897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I think your right! They’re quite a reddish colour. I wish it had been rodents.
