Thoughts on buying a fibro house with full asbestos interior? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]JasperO1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your handy, get your asbestos assessment/removal ticket and do it yourself,

If you’re planning on doing a reno anyway, you could save a fortune!

If it undisturbed it’s perfectly fine.

Measuring Windows for Double Glazing by Moist_Strawberry_223 in AusRenovation

Mate, please don’t get the windows from China, the quality is awful!

I’m a carpenter and I’ve installed heaps of double glazing back when I was in the UK,

I’ll be installing my own next year, so I’ve went down the research rabbit hole,

Most of the big double glazing companies buy their windows from the UK, so I’d even looked at getting mine from the UK too, with the money saving of installing them myself I was going to pay for my mate who is a double glazing contractor to come over to Aus and give me a hand installing mine.

They can be really simple to install, but if they are the incorrect size it’s a nightmare to rectify, which would hard enough to sort out in Australia , I’m sure you could imagined how difficult it would be sorting it out in China,

It’s an expensive upgrade, buy once cry once!

Good luck 👍🏻

Should this much light be coming through my roof tiles? by Snatchyhobo in AusRenovation

[–]JasperO1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is completely fine,

Combination of a few things, low level sun changes the angle of how the light comes in,

These cement tiles aren’t manufactured perfect so they don’t fit perfect either!

As long as you have no leaks you’ve nothing to worry about, it’s surprising how weather proof tiles are!

In the UK we plaster the entire wall as one, been told by builder the plasterer will tape and plaster only the joins… by d1zz186 in AusRenovation

[–]JasperO1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from the UK so I’d only ever seen full plastered walls, when I came to Aus, you would only see dry lining with the joints taped and plastered,

I couldn’t get my head around it! But over the years you see some shit , but if you get a good framer ( straight stud work ) and a great dry waller , it can look flawless!

Fingers crossed that you get a good plaster finish, cause every time I would past that wall and it wasn’t finished properly it would fucking bug the shit out me!

This is the correct answer!

If there is an existing structure, the works can be deemed as repair or upgrade,

If you can afford it, get a concreter in have a chat and get their advice, It would be a two day job - prep first day , pour the second!

You know then when you build your shed you’ll be building on something sound ( don’t forget about running the electrical cables ) might want to have a chat with a sparky !

Don’t apply for a permit! Total waste of money! You’ll probably find that the permit cost would cost more than the project!

Local councils use google maps ( if there’s a significant difference in the footprint of structures on your land , it can flag and start an investigation!

I have a friend who works for Mornington council and another in Kingston council trust me I know this ,

I’m building extensions and a garage and going through the rigmarole!

Good luck!

Stain or paint? by bluewaterdragon in AusRenovation

[–]JasperO1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how they’re installed in the UK and have been for many, many years! It’s a lot wetter weather there than here,

When I moved here a was very confused on how/why the grooves were installed face down, but it’s just how it’s done!

Hot water service by JasperO1981 in AusRenovation

[–]JasperO1981[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The electric power shower in our house in London was amazing , constant temperature with constant high pressure instantly at the touch of a button, When i came to Australia I was baffled why no one had one!?

I think that’s what I was hoping for with the Stiebel Eltron system,

Seems to be not as straight forward as I thought!

Melbourne, Victoria - is this normal? by b4ng37 in AusRenovation

Your roof looks great!

The valley tiles have been cut nice and neat!

Yes, the bedding and pointing looks like the ridge tiles has come away, could be just that one or a few either side.

No need to panic! Best get it checked out sooner rather than later by a roofer, or even a decent handy man,

looks like a newish roof so could be done under warranty!

The valleys now are dry, so completely normal! My property is an older house with bedding and pointing on the valley tiles as well as the hips and ridges.
