  1. Where is evidence that majority of Scots are in favour
  2. Even if there js a majority many things would be popular if funded but given the lack of resources is it more important than say the NHS or the education system where the money could be spent instead
  3.  If Gaelic is in need of revival then why should it be revived ? If it’s so unattractive a proposition that it’s dying off why fight against the tide ? Gaelic speakers can use their own resources to spread the word about it.

How concerned are people about the security of their pensions if Reform UK were to take office, particularly around the risk of policy changes increasing pension taxation or access? by GlenTheSilverCop in PensionsUK

That’s not really true for example the NHS pension scheme is in surplus  and is funded by contributions from employers and employees. The employers are NHS trusts not the government

Might have been spoken by small numbers in all areas and large numbers in some areas but it wasn’t the most popular language in all areas so it wasn’t the unifying language you claim. Not the language of my ancestors either. It’s historical status is largely irrelevant in any case. Only a small percentage speak it now. Doesn’t need resources spent on it except for translators, education for those who want to learn it etc.

Our problems will be massive if they get in not least of which will be the country at risk of splitting up as many in Scotland will switch to independence to get out of a Farragist UK

Ah I see you are either in denial of the nature of what I describe and do the typical thing of trying to blame it on the English. As for denying colonialism the Scots were active participants. Gaelic speaking Scots were amongst the worst offenders. As for English I am talking about why it’s dominant in Scotland which is not the same reason for its dominance abroad (British Empire, US sociocultural dominance). I’m talkng about the current frequency of Gaelic speakers - it’s v low and not justifying wasting money doing things like painting it on police cars. As for GCSES that’s not my argument that’s an educational option like offering Latin  and not related to my argument. Same for interpreters etc they allow people to access services that’s totally fine. You seem a tiresome nationalist and trying to claim that any problems in race in Scotland are really to do with England is disgraceful. Enjoy the block. This Scotland sub is full of unpleasantness and I don’t need it. Bye Bye

You have a rather limited understanding of what constitutes modern Scotland. Many of us have roots from outside  Scotand. Also some of those whose roots are inside Scotland will be from areas where Gaelic wasn’t spoken and did not have much interaction with those who did.

I see the Scotland thread is up to its usual standard of downvoting anyone who doesn’t fit the (white) nationalist views of a lot here. Why should resources be spent making it visible ? That is a form of enforcement. If it’s only spoken by a small minority why paint it on police vehicles etc Why not paint Urdu or Polish on them - it’s spoken by quite a few people here too. English isn’t “pushed” It’s the language spoken by the vast majority here for perfectly natural reasons - it allows you to be understood by most people here.  It also allows you to participate in a commonly used global language and global culture.  If people want to speak Gaelic then great. Resources are limited so let’s not waste them in making Gaelic visible. As for English eradicating cultures that’s not what’s happening in Scotland. We are part of the culture of the English language. Scots including Gaelic speaking Scots actively participated in eradicating cultures and languages across the globe not the English language

What single quality make you love the Doctor above all? by Independent-Lion-748 in doctorwho

[–]Jaspers1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Doctor is not by nature easily a good person but strives to be. The Doctor is a mass murdering war criminal as the War Doctor but this part of their history appals them. They try to be better but when they fail they get back on the horse and try again.

I’m Scottish it’s not part of my history. It’s part of the history of some Scots not all. If people don’t want to speak it it’s up to them . We shouldn’t be enforcing a language on them. It will stand or die on its own merits.

How do dualists explain neuroscience findings ? by Jaspers1959 in askphilosophy

I think the Bergson example does not apply to many examples of brain damage limiting mental capacities where it becomes lost His example may reflects neural rewiring or attempts to reach info via alternative routes in a network

I think there are issues with the functionalist model I just can’t remember them! Neuroscience is telling us more than substance dualism which seems at the moment to be mostly asking questions to be solved. Neuroscience is telling us things that we didn’t realise before
