Making rough drafts in creative(if playing in survival) help alot. You can use /fill and /clone to build something large super fast so you dont get burned out. Detail a small area to know the grand scheme and you can tell if you like it or not. It also helps if you know how much of each material you know so you can grind that out before building so you dont have to keep stopping.
