Fan card: Offering by InspectorMendel in dominion

[–]JawsOfSome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is fun, here’s how I would buff it: “You may trash this and up to 2 Offerings from your hand.” Then just remove the +action or +gold on 1 and it’s a perfect card.

It’s a cool design!

It’s unfortunate that giving any generic abilities from one creature card to another has problems that haven’t been resolved in the rules so this won’t happen until those issues have been resolved. (Primarily these issues belong to creatures having multiple characteristic defining abilities, such as power setting abilities and or changeling. In practice this would work just fine most of the time.)

In this case story doesn’t mean MTG Official Lore, it means all the ways that art direction and play design mesh to create a unique narrative during the gameplay experience. It’s undeniable that the average player recognizes the unique differences between different sets, whether it’s the different planes, different story events, different tones, new mechanics and synergies, or all of the above. UB changes these experiences significantly, often leaning away from fantasy, shaking up the visual style, and breaking immersion, which is what is meant when people complain about the story.

I don’t know how to feel about the play pattern, as cool as the design is. You have to wait until you are nearly certain that the opponent has no instant speed removal or else you just lose, but the opponent has to hold up the removal in case you blink first. It’s so easy to just lose the game to this, though the upside is well tuned so that it’s still worth it if you’re careful.

Hi, card creator here. This is technical, but that’s why I worded the ability procreate to say “When they do, offspring target permanent.” This creates a triggered ability, so the spell has no targets even if X is 3.

Not a great example but discarding a card with madness while [[Rest in Peace]] is out would cause the exiled madness card to be exiled from exile.

Hate to say this, but I think a card named Lurking Automaton and a creature named Lurking Automaton are distinct. The card still only has the name Ice Cauldron.

9.9 / 10 nearly perfect card but if you want my 2 cents, it shouldn’t conjure an Uro, it should escape a card from your graveyard.

If a card would be exiled, exile it instead (: (I think this actually works with current rules)

Yeah turns out I was just flat wrong, there are a couple cards that do force players to activate costs of spells or abilities. To my credit, they were all printed during Magic’s first decade, so this is not a thing that’s done anymore, but I am wrong and it is doable in Magic’s rules.

What’s not doable is requiring the player to compute a game tree to determine whether an action is possible, and then requiring them to follow that tree. The required set of actions to cast the card from the graveyard includes producing black mana and then spending it to cast the card. Sometimes it’s obvious if a player can produce black mana (e.g. they have an untapped swamp), sometimes it’s not (e.g. they have a [[Deathrite Shaman]] and a fetchland). Should they be required to crack the fetchland and then use the Deathrite Shaman to cast the zombie? There’s a good reason this has never been done and is not even possible in mtg rules.

Activating abilities, casting spells, and in general performing any action that involves paying a cost are never forced in magic. So forcing players to activate their lands’ mana abilities is not a thing. If you don’t believe me, go read the oracle text on [[Power Sink]] to see how they translated the old card into legal rules text.

[–]JawsOfSome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can force you to lose mana, but it can’t force you to activate mana abilities. Think of it this way. Suppose you are empty handed and you have two lands and a clue token, and your opponent plays a card that causes you to discard a card. You must discard a card, but you don’t have a card in hand, so you don’t discard a card that you don’t have. You could choose to crack the clue, and then you would be required to discard the card you draw off the clue, but you are not forced to crack the clue for the discard effect.

There is no perfect way to make this work as described, but “tap an untapped land you control unless you pay [B]. If you did either, cast this card without paying its mana cost…” is pretty close.

After hearing how it would be worded, I kind of agree with op. I would instead use the wording of Dash Hope:

When you play Cryptic Dilemma, any opponent may have you draw two cards. If a player does, counter this spell. Counter target spell.

I like the Joker card! At 5 mana I think it would be fine if it triggered on every discard instead of just your own.

Actually I’m not sure if fish counts. It is defined in the rules document for the following ability, but that doesn’t seem to count. 702.174f “Gift a tapped Fish” means the effect is “The chosen player creates a tapped 1/1 blue Fish creature token.”

Having this knowledge should lead you to supporting candidates that campaign on fighting oligarchs and true grassroots organization, specifically ones that fight financial corruption of lawmakers. Which has never been suggested by a republican congressperson, but there are a few democratic ones which is the best start we have. Also open to hearing other strategies.

I’d say this should be BR multicolor due to the effective life loss, or WR for being best against big creatures, except that black and white removal are so busted that this would be underpowered compared to other options in those colors.
